Black Girl Angel

A study in vulnerability, and in who is allowed to have it.
In 2017, the Georgetown Law Center on Poverty and Inequality published Girlhood Interrupted, a study finding that adults perceive Black girls as needing less nurturing, protection, support, and comfort than white girls of the same age, and as knowing more about adult topics. This perception, known as adultification, begins as early as age five. Its consequences are documented in Monique Morris’s Pushout (2016): Black girls are suspended at disproportionate rates, often for “willful defiance,” a category that can mean little more than tone, attitude, or presence. Over time, expression is read as “fast,” pain as “attitude,” and need as “grown.” The girl who needed to be held is taught to soothe herself and care for others instead.

While the neighborhood should be seen as protection and the church as a place to live in truth it often times work in opposites within certain areas. A block where her counter part might just seem innocent, within our neighborhood our black girls are targeted for much degrading and sinister things. While the church home is supposed to be a place of protection can be a cellar of judgement and anger.
