Long post: A year ago, I bought a house.

And every bit of it felt like progress toward the “American Dream” the world told me to chase. But nobody tells you that dream comes with fine print — whole chapters missing from the double-laminated brochure.

So here’s what I’ve learned in my first year of homeownership — the Treveon edition:

1. Furniture is overwhelming. You’ll feel like every room needs to be HGTV-ready in two weeks. It doesn’t. Backorders are real. Delays are disrespectful. And sometimes the couch you waited 14 weeks for won’t fit through the door.
2. Outdoor furniture is a scam. $2,200 for a wicker chair and a table that wobbles in the wind? Be serious.
3. If you have wood floors and a dog, get a robot vacuum. Mine works harder than I do some days.
4. Triple-check your finishes. Or you might end up with a $15K “plot twist” when the tile you thought you picked isn’t what shows up.
5. Celebrate the win. You bought a house. That’s not small. Pop a bottle. Dance in the empty living room — and every other room too.
6. Don’t rush to buy. Buy when you are ready. Not when Instagram is showing house tours or when your cousin closes on her second property. Or because you got dumped and you want to show them who you are, or because you don’t know how to cope with the loss of a loved one so you just spend money to feel better….my bad - let me focus.
7. People will assume you’re “set.” It’s not that simple. Homeownership is fixing things you didn’t break… with money you forgot you needed for groceries.
8. It might not feel like home right away. Give it time —and maybe one dramatic cry beside a chair that looked better online.
9. Equity is cool. But peace is better. Don’t buy stress to post square footage. Comfort > clout.

But as I reflect, homeownership is truly a blessing and something I would do again and again. But like all blessings — it’ll humble you before it hugs you.

Here’s to year one: the lessons, the learning, the fish frys, the tears, and all the laughs and conversations in between.
