Leap day: a rare day - the perfect day to raise awareness for rare diseases 🦄

Today marks 1790 days since the first time I felt an unbearable pain in my chest. At the time I thought it was a heart attack, but 670 attacks later I know it’s ‘just’ my oesophagus is being a b*tch.

Achalasia is a rare disorder of the oesophagus with an estimated prevalence of 1 in every 100.000. Its symptoms vary from person to person, the most common ones being difficulty in swallowing, regurgitation & chest pain. The latter has been the main symptom for me from the start, the other two progressively worsening over time.

I’ve gone through various cycles of grief, acceptance and hope these years. Not always in that specific order, and never linear - always with ups and downs.

It’s been quite a journey to accept that it’ll never get better, something I need to learn how to live with. Many times I thought I was there: that I had accepted it and moved on — only for it to hit me straight in the face again a few months later.

During 2022 and 2023 in particular I noticed how much a low mental brain-space affected my ability to deal with the pain attacks. But luckily by the end of 2023 I finally made it through the waiting list to see a medical psychologist.

Which has been confrontational, uncomfortable and insightful all at the same time. But it has already helped me recently, by delaying the inevitable negative thoughts during some of the most painful & longest chest pains I’ve ever had.

Writing about such moments afterwards helps to get a grip on my thoughts, and to share with loved ones what’s going through my mind. Included a short snippet in the 2nd slide.

Other slides include various hospital visits, white lips after each barium X-ray, liquid diet weeks, 24-hr manometry, and 3 slides of gratitude. Grateful to be able to stay active with running & climbing, and to have Sander by my side. Either when I’m in pain at 3AM, or when we’re chasing mountains together♥️

It’s an uncomfortable topic to talk about online, but I hope it helps to raise awareness & maybe help or comfort someone who’s also struggling with an invisible disorder. You’re not alone🤍

Dresscode said pink please, closet said no, fabric stash said I CAN HELP!

… and that’s how this turtleneck in pink crushed velvet came to life!

Very quick little side project from last month. I’ve had this fun crushed velvet for ages, and was never sure what to do with it. Until @fayetti.spaghetti celebrated her birthday in pink — giving me a perfect excuse for another last-minute sewing challenge: sew something pink 💖

The fabric originates from the FW17 collection by @damienravn, the first collection I worked on during my internship at the studio. These were the last few metres left in stock at the end of the season, which I got my hands on during a stock sale a few months later.

Not sure yet what I’ll be making from the last bits of fabric that I have left after this top, so I’m very open to suggestions haha! Leaning towards something more flowy/drapey because it drapes gorgeously with more volume! I’ll add some pics of the original FW17 styles in my stories today :)

The pattern is self-drafted, just a very simple tight-fitting longsleeve with a turtleneck/mock neck. I added some pin-tuck detailing to the mock neck, cuffs and waistband to give it something extra (and an attempt to stay on the right side of the thin line between fancy & tacky 😂)

It’s also my first make of 2024! Which for a chance did not spend over a year on the work-in-progress pile like many of the other projects I start, who would’ve guessed? 😂

To be completely honest, the top did get a brief chance to meet the members of my WIP pile though. Because I may have left the hem unfinished during the party, because I may or may not have ran out of time to finish sewing all the pin-tucks for the waistband.

So I tucked it in my shirt during the party (second-to-last pic!), and came back for the waistband later that week. After which the top had to say goodbye to its friends in the WIP pile, as it got upgraded to my closet. But being the first pink garment in my closet was a recipe for success: it instantly made new friends who loved a new color among them 😌

(Last pic features the sky’s contribution to the color theme that evening 💖)

My ever indecisive mind is still arguing whether to write a personal update about the past few months, or to just keep it light and silly. Ironically the latter already says a lot about the former, considering silly dad-jokes are pretty often a coping mechanism to distract myself from reality 🙃

So I guess I'll just stick with a metaphor about the weather instead (didn't think the day would ever come where I could relate to the Dutch weather, but here I am). Because "irregular & unpredictable" applies just as well to my days lately, as to the mishmash of sunny and rainy days in NL✨

So to focus on those sunny ones, I wanted to share a lil gratitude-photodump of the past months again →

1- crimpy crimpy yellow ftw! 💛 (@beest.amsterdam, 6C)

2- surprised myself by sending this orange boulder on my second attempt, because big open holds are quite my anti-style (also @beest.amsterdam, 6B)

3- our first days of outdoor lead climbing on our own, and Freÿr humbled us real quick 😂 // L'ascendante (4c), Freÿr

4- sandstone slab climbing felt more familiar, where we dared to try some 6th grades // Michel Vaillant (6a+), Anhee

5- "Health issues Quartets: collect them all in a single week!"(hay-fever saying hi every day made it easy to score points)

6- handsome Ori wearing his best tie on my birthday♥️

7- slow peaceful mornings in camping paradise ✨

8- watching the sun rise after spending our first night in our new-old Kip Caravan (from 1986!), inherited from my great aunt & uncle, now parked in ✨polder-paradise✨

9- surrounded by birds: loud and silent at the same time

10- picked up running again whenever I had some energy. It took a whole lot of slow runs and a bunch of "hydration training" (aka not focusing on running itself, just on keeping water down while running) – but I'm slowly starting to get back in the groove. Built up the distances a bit and loving how well the long runs are able to calm down my racing mind. (thx legs for keeping up with me)

And now I'm kindly gonna ask my esophagus to hand my dinner over to my stomach bc I crave ice cream (and it's been 2+ hrs since I ate it lol) 🙃
