Socializing doesn't mean they have to interact with every person or animal that passes by 🐾

In fact, observing from a distance helps build confidence without forcing them to feel uncomfortable 💚

They’re dogs - find preferred outlets for their dog activities and you’ll both be happier!

🪏 Does your dog like to dig?
➡️ Get them a sandbox or make them a digging pit!

🎸 Does your dog like to shred?
➡️ Let them help break down your cardboard or give them a head of lettuce! Or even let them completely destroy their toys (that’s the point of stuffed dog toys)!

🦈 Does your dog like to chew?
➡️ Provide hard chews like bully sticks, collagen sticks, or No-Hide chews (@earthanimal1979)!
➡️ Harder, non-food chews like @mybenebone can also be great, though dental issues can occur, so use at your preferred comfort level and relative to your dog’s dental health and vet recommendations.

I’ve been caring for Simone for nearly two years now, and she has become one of those cats whose unique routines I know by heart. 🖤

She’s an indoor-outdoor kitty who loves keeping an eye on the world from the window, chasing her feather wand, attacking her catnip banana, and making sure her @weruva or @tikicat wet food is served exactly as expected.

Later in the day, once the important cat business is handled, cuddles usually move to the top of her agenda.

There’s something really special about caring for the same cats over time and getting to know not just what they need, but what they genuinely enjoy and look forward to.

Simone, it’s always a pleasure. 🐈‍⬛

Meet Griswald! 🐾

Griswald is still a kitten (although you might not believe it looking at the size of him! 😂), and we’re working hard to make sure his experiences with veterinary medicine set him up for a lifetime of successful, low-stress veterinary care.

This is what Feline Friendly, Fear Free veterinary medicine can look like. ❤️

No scruffing. No wrestling. No pinning him down.

Instead, we’re using gentle control, a considerate approach, positive reinforcement, and a VERY tasty food distraction to help Griswald feel comfortable and in control during his blood draw.

And here’s the important part: This didn’t happen overnight!

Our wonderful nurse, Lauren, has spent multiple cooperative care sessions getting to know Griswald, learning his preferences, understanding his body language, and recognizing how he responds to a needle poke.

That relationship and preparation made this moment possible. 🥹

Will this approach work for every cat? Of course not! Every patient is an individual, and Fear Free medicine means adapting our techniques to THEIR needs rather than expecting them to adapt to ours.

But kittens, in particular, can be incredibly food motivated, and early positive experiences like this can make a HUGE difference in how they approach veterinary visits for the rest of their lives.

And for our veterinary professionals watching who are already wondering about sample quality… 👀

Yes, we checked! Griswald’s sample had only 1+ hemolysis and no clotting, with no impact on the interpretation of his final laboratory results. 🙌

At Red Rock Veterinary Health, we believe that HOW we provide veterinary care matters just as much as the care itself.

Because the goal isn’t simply to get the blood sample.

The goal is to get the blood sample while preserving the patient’s trust. ❤️🐈

That’s the difference thoughtful, individualized, Fear Free veterinary medicine can make.

Loving a cat with behavior challenges can be both deeply rewarding and genuinely difficult.

During an IAABC Foundation lecture presented by Kristin Buller and Dr. Kelly Ballantyne, one theme stayed with me: we cannot support an animal well while overlooking the person caring for them.

For cat caregivers, that might mean carefully managing interactions between cats, planning around visitors, cleaning after repeated house-soiling, or worrying about who can safely provide care when you’re away.

Those are feline examples I’m applying to the lecture’s broader caregiver-support themes. The research discussed was predominantly about dog caregivers and should not be presented as a cat-specific study.

What I want to bring into my own work is – when someone tells me they’re struggling – I want there to be room for that honesty and vulnerability.

We can take a cat’s needs seriously while asking whether the person has the information, practical help, resources, and emotional support they need.

Compassion for the caregiver belongs alongside compassion for the cat.

💡Did you know you can use leash distance as a reward?

Rewards aren’t just food; they can be anything your dog enjoys 🙂

🎾Toy

🍗 Treats

🐾Walking distance

This means that if they were to bark, they would have to go into “Heel” until passing the person 🙅🏽‍♀️

The best benefit of using positive reinforcement is that they're excited to participate 🎉

Is your cat scared of the cat carrier? And as soon as you bring it out, they run and hide? 🫣🐈

Don’t keep your cat carrier in the storage room or garage, because as soon as your cat will associate the carrier coming out to a scary vet visit or car ride- and their stress levels will already increase before you’ve even left for the vet.

There’s a very easy solution!

Keep your cat carrier out in a well-trafficked room, so your cat can interact with it on their terms, such as sniffing it, rubbing against it, or even having daily naps in it like Leroy loves to do.

This also helps the carrier become a positive association and retain familiar scents of home for when you do need to go for those vet visits.

Do you keep your cat carrier out for your cat to interact with it? Simple steps to create a @fearfreepets vet visit!
