🎊 9years of Young Salone 🎊

On September 10th 2017, six young Sierra Leoneans met to plan an event, the very first #SLACfest, to raise funds for those affected by the mudslide a month earlier. Out of tragedy, lifetime friendships and partnerships were formed.

Thank you to everyone who has been part of this journey directly and indirectly.

We are the Young Sierra Leonean.

That’s what we’re all about here at Young Salone.
For almost 10 years we’ve been doing our bit to change the narrative and connect the dots between young Sierra Leoneans at home and in the diaspora. We’ve been celebrating our culture, instilling pride, and reminding us that it’s okay to be a hybrid of cultures, existing ‘somewhere between’, as wi yone @abubyillah kin say.

Yesterday evening’s Kip Kompin was so special. A packed room with endless good vibes. Saloneans and friends of Salone gathering to mark our 65th Independence Day and celebrate the abundance of talent in our community.

✨ You can call me Madame Producer - A woman that makes shit happen time and time again. 🔌⚙️🔩 💪🏽 🎭 🎤 🎶 🎥

A week later and I am still over the moon that we pulled off #SLACfest2025 and we did it in style! An epic three-day extravaganza celebrating the vibrant arts, culture, history, and talents of Sierra Leone and her diaspora.

Hosted at @theatrepeckham as part of this year’s Young, Gifted & Black season and brought to you by all of us at @young_salone , it really was yet another moment of legacy-building, community-nurturing, and joyful celebration. In such challenging times of division, we desperately need intergenerational spaces of unity, joy, and healing - and we created just that for Saloneans and friends of Salone. 🇸🇱

Beyond proud of myself and my co-curator @abubyillah , whose commitment and dedication to our people and our culture is deep and fuels me to keep pushing too, even when it’s hard.

Grateful for our amazing team at YSL - ongoingly committed to our mission to rewrite the narrative and instil pride in being Sierra Leonean, whether at home or in the diaspora. Grateful to our volunteers, vendors, hosts, MANY contributors, backstage team - the list of Thank Yous is endless (look out for full production credits soon! 😆).

Curation and production work, especially at this scale and at this level, takes SKILL, time, care, passion and intention. Thankful that the love we poured into this festival translated and our audiences and communities were delighted. Thankful for the generosity of our community. Positive representation matters and there was plenty to be found on and off the #SLACfest stage.

Just look at our gorgeous set, designed by our team member Amina, inspired by a Sierra Leonean front room. 😍

And we really did make ourselves at home, exploring fambul business, problem-solving, dreaming, laughing, enjoying, eating, drinking, (un)learning, dancing… our programme HAD IT ALL!

🌸 Some signs of life for the algo ✨

I’m busy AF as we push through to the finish line of bringing this year’s #SLACfest to you (🥳🇸🇱), but managed to squeeze in time away from my laptop to catch up with friends; celebrate the amazing young people I’ve worked with this year at @b.d.y.d ; head back to Cambridge and celebrate my friend @samara.linton and talk about my own work as a writer, campaigner and artist, with students at Homerton; enjoy some good good food (shout out Mildred’s and Little Baobab at The Africa Centre!); enjoy the INCREDIBLE Nigerian Modernism exhibition at The Tate; and of course enjoy our @young_salone Pre-SLACfest events at @theatrepeckham & @poplarunion (absolutely love their teams 🥹😍).

And this week I took my new poetic short film, ‘The Waves’, to Oxford for its latest screening 🌊 🌊 🌊 , accompanied by a poetry set, sharing work from my upcoming next collection and facilitated a creative writing workshop for locals. 💧
