I had ideas about turkey. They were wrong. Turns out turkey are sweet, affectionate birds that build lifelong bonds with others, even other species. They’re very curious and follow at a short distance when I’m out, making chirps and trills. If I work in an area for a bit, they find a spot and lay down. Sometimes they even pose for the camera. I don’t think either of us expected so much personality from different birds but we certainly didn’t expect to have different relationships with individual birds of the same species.

Meet the newest boy in our family, Cedar. His first day included being born, standing up, walking around and finding and drinking from momma. He outdid himself the second day by doing this. How is that even possible?

Rolling on the tracks with Rail Explorers pedal assist cars. An eight mile trip into the countryside that kept me smiling the entire way. Can’t wait to take another ride at sunset!

Baked pears with honey and lime. Turns out you really can’t go wrong with baked pears. We were given pears at our local farmers market. They were on the verge of “going bad”. Shout out to George and all of the other farmers from the @amador_farmers_market.

My neck duck fell asleep on my shoulder.

Again.

Meet Obee, the neck duck. Obee is temporarily living with us and will go back with the flock as soon as possible. In the meantime, Obee will be subjected to snuggles, trips to the farmers market and hanging out with our small dogs Josie and Blue.

Remember that time you trapped a skunk because it was eating your chicken and duck eggs and then you used a fulcrum to move the skunk into the shade onto a plate of water and gave it an egg? I do.

Having a lot of animals and having respect for animals puts us in funny places sometimes. Now I’m spending my day trying to figure out how to get this cute but stinky little skunk out of the cage it’s in. Dammit. Is this a metaphor for something?

On another note, if you’ve never had the chance to hang out with a skunk without a scent gland, they are amazingly sweet, soft and very trusting. I had the luck to meet a de-scented mother skunk that had just given birth to five babies. One by one she dropped her babies into my lap so I could baby sit them while she got food for everyone. When she came back and the babies were eating she sat on my lap made cute noises and asked to be pet.

Goose crew 2023.

Bella finally has the babies she wanted for the last few years. Several weeks ago, she hatched a gosling that didn’t make it and was heartbroken. She had eight more eggs but none of them hatched. So we did something with the hope of making her happier and healthier. You see, a momma goose will sit on eggs for over 30 days with little food or water for the beginning and none for the last week. Her eyes were sunken and she barely moved when offered food and water. After 34 days we found four goslings that were hatched in an incubator and brought them into the orchard. Bella could hear but not see them. Before putting the goslings in, the remaining eggs needed to be removed. Despite her weak state she bit me repeatedly as I removed the eggs. She was sure that I was taking her babies. When the last egg was gone she was too tired to fight and looked defeated. As the first gosling was lifted into view, everything changed. Using her neck like a hand she pulled the first of four goslings against her and wrapped it up tightly. Her eyes brightened and she let out a cry. She came back to life as three more babies got the same treatment. We knew we’d done the right thing. Both of us cried. Leroy, her mate, came down to kick my ass and then rushed into the nest to welcome his children like any proud father would.

After years living in large cities waking up up to the sound of subways, trash trucks, sirens, buses and yelling. I moved to the quiet of the country. And somehow I replaced those sounds with the soothing sounds of roosters, Guinea fowl, ducks, geese, goats and huge dogs. Some days it makes me miss those trash trucks.

Morning from the farm!

This is Bella. She’s tried to hatch eggs many times over the 3 years we’ve had her. Unfortunately, she’s been unsuccessful. This year she’s finally a momma & a sweet one too. Here’s to Bella for sitting for over 30 days to bring this new life into the world.

Her partner Leroy is excited about becoming Father Goose. Attempts to bring Bella food and water require that I cross the boundaries he sets. If you’ve never been around an aggressive goose, it’s not fun.

He’s a good guardian and he takes his job seriously. It means I pull up my socks and put on thick pants or I get bruises on my legs. It also means we are less worried about our ducks and new gosling. Leroy will give anyone who enters the same stern warnings. It is with his protection and her determination that this cute little fuzzball has entered our world, and we are all pretty happy about it!
