POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

My new book Danny B is out TODAY! If it’s not in your local bookstore, please ask them why not

It’s been 10 yrs since my last book & I’m just gonna tell you exactly what I’m trying to do here cuz obviously we don’t live in a book-reading world like we once did so I’d rather help explain how to understand it than be coy & hope people pick up on it

The story is over the top & sensationalistic. & It’s very close to the true story as told to me by the main character & it includes all the tabloid thrills: sex, drugs, punk rock, dead bodies, motorcycles. The narrative is sorta 90s noir

But its form is set in direct tension against the adrenaline that thrills like this are most commonly used for in entertainment. There’s a structuralist method to how it’s told, like a Haneke movie or maybe even Robbe-Grillet, like a lot of the action happens in-between the scenes

But the edges are softer than that. I was thinking of it as little puffs that dissipate, like smoke signals; images from dreams you can only half-glimpse in the morning; ancient Chinese poetry like Li Po

Which basically means there’s a lot of white space on the page. & I wouldn’t have been drawn to telling this story in a more conventional form & I wouldn’t have dared to suddenly try my hand at poetry about the mists of rocky waterfalls— It’s the tension between the form & content that interested me

I started work on it in 2014. I can’t guess how many thousands of hrs went into sculpting it since then. It’s sparse, just 23k words, down from I dunno… 8 million?

& Up until the very last proofread, I was pretty sure it sucked & I’d screwed it up. & I dunno how these things happen, but now I think it’s really good, like I really did make the thing that I set out to make

Endless gratitude to @dannybelrose & @featherproof_books

Here’s me & Danny w/ a pizza somewhere in southern OR maybe 2012? & Last time I saw him last yr

Of all the things I remember about Danny B — I would say this:

I saw him act at the Trapdoor Theater, where he played multiple roles in an experimental play where it starts as he is getting drugs injected into his eye and he OD’s and is a junky ghost for the whole play (at least for that character he played).

What was important to me was — because it was a small theater with a lot to do, Danny took it upon himself to sweep outside the theater and tidy up while people made their way in. Danny greeted people, smiled, and was really sweeping. To me, that was Danny — humble and about to perform his craft at the highest level.

I love that Tim K wrote this. I think I remember him talking about this project when I saw him at Rainbo in 2018. Check out his other books on Featherproof.

I am thrilled to share the cover for my debut short story collection, Some Stupid Glow. Tyler Dean Erickson’s beautiful photo is the base of the cover, and Zach Dodson did a great job with the design!

Preorders have begun for the book, so if you want to get a copy, you can order it at the usual places or on the publisher’s website: that link is in my bio. I am excited to share more details about the book and the release party plans in the weeks to come. If anyone is interested in doing a review or interview, please let me know.

Many excellent books don’t find the readership they merit. Looking through the PNW fiction section in The Propeller Store, it took only moments to note three underappreciated books that would delight any reader of literary fiction.

“I’m Fine, But You Appear to Be Sinking” by Leyna Krow of Spokane (Featherproof). These stories are smart, funny, moving, and defy genre. In an interview with Propeller magazine, Krow said a friend suggested they might be “fiction science.” The publisher says, “The strange collides with the mundane: close to home and far from it, in suburban neighborhoods and rural communities, with cycling apocalypses and backyard tigers.” True, and also: each story vibrates with its own brilliant energy and the collection should be revered.

“Fictional Film Club” by Mark Savage of Portland (Deep Overstock). From the publisher: “On the surface this is a collection of film reviews for movies that don’t exist. But in footnotes that begin academic and slowly become more personal, a story emerges of the reviewer, an English teenage boy, as he comes to terms with an unrequited love and struggles with things that he cannot change…Perfect for fans of Jorge Luis Borges, Nabakov’s Pale Fire, or film history and theory.” Not only is all of that accurate, but Savage pulls it off with elegance and wit. This book should be famous not just in the PNW, but nationwide.

“Criminals” by Ben Masaoka of Seattle (Propeller). From our website: “Criminals follows the lives of a sister and brother, Ruth and Hank Tanazaki, as they struggle to free themselves from the weight of their parents’ generation in a small Japanese American community in Los Angeles in the late 1950s and early 1960s.” Masaoka worked on this exquisite novel for years, and his care and talent is evident on every page. This is a unique, masterful novel whose depth grows imperceptibly, but becomes profound.

The Propeller Store at @urbanitepdx is open daily, 10-6.
