It Takes a Village was about bringing people together, supporting local businesses and creating more opportunities for our Upper Village community to connect, shop local and experience everything our neighbourhood has to offer.

With support from the Transit Construction Mitigation Fund, we were able to bring free community programming and events to the Upper Village while creating opportunities for local businesses, vendors and community partners to participate and connect with residents.

We’re grateful for the support that helped make this summer’s festival possible and allowed us to create more activity and engagement within our main street community.

This project has been funded by the City of Toronto’s Transit Construction Mitigation Fund, as part of the Government of Canada through the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario.

🎨🪑 Introducing our Community Dining Benches!🪑🎨

What happens when local businesses, artists, students and community partners come together? A whole lot of creativity — and some pretty fantastic places to sit!✨

We’re excited to share the story behind our Community Dining Bench Project, created in partnership with @alexpark_cc, @ocaduniversity & @ocaducead .

We sourced small benches to be placed outside participating local businesses, then brought together talented local artists and OCAD students to design and paint each one. The goal? To create something unique for every business — with each bench reflecting the personality, character and spirit of the place it sits outside. 🎨💡

Beyond adding a little colour and creativity to the streetscape, the project gave us an opportunity to engage our community through art while providing participating businesses with alternative seating options for their patrons.❤️

And now… we get to share the finished results! 🙌

A huge thank you to all of the businesses who opened their doors — and their sidewalks — to this project:

And a big thank you to @mec_toronto staff for all their help in providing space and assistance in the execution of this project!

We’re so excited to share the work, the process and the finished benches with you. Keep an eye out as you explore the neighbourhood — and if you spot one, tag us and let us know which is your favourite!👀🪑🎨

This project has been funded by the City of Toronto’s Dining District Program, as part of Government of Canada support through the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario.

August had us on the move, from Edmonton to Montréal to Toronto, investing time in the relationships, ideas, and communities that make Canada’s innovation ecosystem stronger.

Our Managing Partner, Lise Birikundavyi, spent time in Edmonton with friends across Alberta’s venture capital community, including at the @vcaa.ca Annual BBQ Event, continuing to deepen BKR’s relationships in a region that has become an important part of our work.

In Toronto, we co-organized the second edition of the Investor’s Summer Mixer alongside @nobellum and @BLCKVCOrg Canada, with the support of @CIBC Innovation Banking, an evening of thoughtful discussions and connection.

The next day, we joined @facecoalition’s Melamoon & the Nobellum Innovator Summit, bringing together founders, scientists, investors, capital partners, and ecosystem leaders to talk about the different capital pathways to help strong Black-led STEM businesses to grow and scale.

We were also thrilled to celebrate alongside our friends as the Honourable @EvanJSolomon, Minister of AI and Digital Innovation, announced @FedDevOntario $1.2 million investment in the CanBlack STEM initiative, supporting the next phase of Nobellum’s work helping Black STEM founders commercialize and scale their businesses.

Our Partner, Ebenezer Arthur, joined the inaugural @KeiretsuForumCanada Black Innovation Alliance (K4BIA) Summer Summit, bringing founders and investors together to help strengthen the capital pipeline for Black-led companies.

And our Co-Founder & General Partner, Isaac Olowolafe, took the stage at @CanadaEngineers' inaugural conference as a keynote speaker, sharing lessons from his entrepreneurial and investment journey with the next generation of engineers and innovators.

Different cities, different rooms, but a common thread: bringing together founders, capital, ideas, and community to create more pathways for great companies to grow.

Swipe through for a glimpse of some of the moments that made August special. 📸

As September begins, we are carrying that momentum forward - continuing to connect, collaborate, and champion the founders and communities building what’s next.
