This one goes on main because I was so excited to be asked by the mighty @feedravenous to write about the Wendy’s emo album. Never has my particular wheelhouse been so full. Read at the link in my bio; and support Ravenous!

@shokdiesel has spent decades as a journalist. Asking for things was never part of the job description. 🗞️🐦‍⬛

Now he is a co-founder of @feedravenous, a worker-owned food and culture publication, and asking for things is the job. Subscriptions. Donations. Sponsorships. Support from people who believe that independent food journalism is worth paying for.

He hated it at first. He is getting better at it. And his advice to anyone building something new is the same advice Erick Williams of @virtuerestaurantchi gave him over lunch the day before this episode was recorded: You have to be a salesperson no matter what. You cannot be bashful or shy, particularly when fundraising.

Web hosting. Transcriptions. Lawyers. Accountants. LLC renewals. Dining budgets. 🍽️🐦‍⬛

This is what it actually costs to build independent food journalism from scratch. Ashok Selvam and the @feedravenous team are not asking for support to fund a glamorous media startup. They are asking so they can keep the lights on, pay themselves full-time, pay freelancers what they deserve, and eventually take a few big swings on the stories that matter most.

Ravenous is a worker-owned food and culture publication built by five journalists who left traditional media to do the work they actually care about. Their fundraising campaign is running right now and every subscription and donation makes a difference!

Five journalists. Five very different backgrounds. One publication built around actually having room to write what you care about. 🗞️🐦‍⬛

Ashok Selvam is the co-founder of @feedravenous, a worker-owned food and culture publication launched this May by five journalist co-founders who decided the future of food media did not have to look like what they had just left.

Last summer, @shokdiesel won the @beardfoundation Jonathan Gold Local Voice Award. Six weeks after that, he was laid off from Eater Chicago after over a decade as the only full-time staff member.

What the Ravenous team is building is one of the most exciting things happening in food media. And right now, Ravenous is running a fundraising campaign to keep the lights on and pay journalists what they deserve! Subscribe or donate at weareravenous.com.

A bunch of food writers got fired recently, because that’s all that happens to food writers these days. Everyone’s a freelancer and no one’s getting paid. Well, my name is Céline mothertootin’ Dion and i am je suis sick of it!
How can I make memes if there is no food culture to poke fun at?
Well today there is good news, those scrappy unemployed food writers have banded together to create @feedravenous and if you subscribe with Céline’s special code you can get 25% off. Here you go mon homies:

Support real food writing today. Without it we are surely doomed. Mon Dieu!

Everything is bigger in Texas! But with the popularity of GLP1s 💉, restaurants are responding with downsized menu options, something we would've consider snack-y 🧀 a few years ago. But maybe portions sizes have always been too big. Do you think they should be reconsidered regardless of GLPs?
