Felandus Thames’s She did what she could (2025) honors the life and legacy of Dorie Ladner, a civil rights activist, community organizer, and social worker who played a significant role in the movement for racial justice. Composed of thousands of hair beads arranged into a vibrant portrait, the work transforms each individual bead into a building block of memory and recognition. Part of The Aldrich Decennial: I am what is around me, the piece reflects Thames’s ongoing exploration of how material, history, and collective remembrance can preserve the stories of those who shaped the world around us.

On view through January 10, 2027.
