Underground Open Mic Fest: Outside Stage

We had to split the post in order to fit pics of everyone who performed. Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts to the top of our lungs, for making our open mic into the community it is. Whether we are at a venue or a park or someone's apartment, The Underground Open Mic is yours to make new friends and try new things and express your art. We are grateful and lucky that we've been at this for 5 years now. Together, we'll keep doing it for many more years to come. Thanks for being part of our little thing. See ya Monday(s).

Phil Ochs is one of those musicians who has undoubtedly had a massive impact on my life as a whole. After doing a deep-dive into his discography a few years ago, Phil quickly became one of my favorite musicians/songwriters of all time. I now own every single one of his records (see slide 4), and even have a framed photo of him in my room (lmao)!

Alongside my deep reverence for his lyricism, I also deeply admire the way he lived his life. Phil was someone who was completely unafraid to speak truth to power, both through his music and his activism. His boldness and courage is something I can only hope to partially emulate in my own lifetime, and is something that deserves to be celebrated in the present day– especially in light of the current political climate, and the US government’s current failings that, in many ways, eerily resemble some of the subject matters brought to light in Phil’s work in the 1960s.

With that being said, I’m absolutely honored to be participating in a tribute show of Phil’s music (in honor of the 50th anniversary of his passing) on Sunday, June 14th at the legendary @cafewha in NYC!!! I’ll be performing a song of Phil’s, and will be featured alongside some other wonderful performers.

Being able to take part in this show is so deeply exciting to me. If you’re a fan of Phil’s as well, please do come to this! It’s going to be such a special night <3 Link to the tix is in my bi0 :)
