GAMEPLAY:
Trial of the Forest blends beautifully mechanics like worker placement, resource management, tableau building, combat, treasure seeking and more.

As the chosen representative of their animal type, players take 3 actions in any order:
1.) Movement, up to the number of step icons on your tableau
2.) Paying for, playing, and resolving a card, then adding it to your tableau
3.) Using a paw token to take the action at your location

Ideally, you’ll want to do all three but only using the paw token to take an action is obligatory. One of your paw tokens is golden, and grants you the secondary benefit of the location.

At various locations, you can gather resources, visit a market to buy tools/weapons, gain additional cards, encounter creatures, or choose to solo quest into the most dangerous and rewarding areas of the forest.

As you add cards to your tableau you gain their symbols which grant you things like additional movement, additional resources, or higher combat strength.

Some cards have an angel/demon wing which moves you along the good/evil morality track. There is no penalty for choosing either, but go all in on your choice for the most end game points.

When all paw tokens have been used, camps are set. Take the camp benefit at your location, and the round ends. After 3 rounds the highest score wins!

THOUGHTS:
I’ve really enjoyed this game. It almost feels like a campaign game, with quests, combat, buying tools and weapons, but it’s actually a densely packed, shorter than expected (only 12 paw token actions and 3 camps) adventure.

The components are quality and the insert is perfect for storage. Recommended for anyone with a spirit of adventure and a taste for evil, I mean good …well, it’s your Trial - you decide.

Road trip this weekend to game with all of these wonderful people in South Carolina and wow did we get to play some fantastic titles!

The first game already being played when I arrived was Ticket Booth from @grandpabecksgames (not pictured) and I could tell everyone was loving it. Sad I missed out, I got to play it at a special event at GenCon and know it’s a really fun game.

Next up was Size Wise from @gameheadgames another short light game of not being shortest or longest when it comes to secretly guessing sizes of random things.

Trial of the Forest from @rebelstudio.eu and @asmodee_usa was the real highlight of the day for me. I’ll do a deep dive on the title later but it’s a solid medium weight game of tableau building, encounters, expeditions and more, set in a woodland universe where you choose to be good or evil - but don’t be in the middle!

We also played Sequence Queens, from @goliathgamesus and @luckyduckgames which takes the classic game of Sequence and adds on an extra layer with an extra new board and bonus power for the Queens.

Unfortunately we ran out of time after that as we had a long journey back to Atlanta, but I’m hoping this becomes a monthly or every other month get together. Great friends and great games means a great time!

Thanks @kandbplaygames @tabletopticker @fellowsheep.games for coming out and playing!
