Femmy Otten ( @femmy_otten ) is the first Creative Residency Saga resident supported by the Mondriaan Fund. Born in Amsterdam in 1981, based in The Hague. She works in sculpture, painting and drawing, around the body and human presence. Wood carving has been a long focus, and with it the physical relation between hand and material. In Saga she will work with woodworking and washi makers, and with local craftspeople, looking at where craft and contemporary art, tradition and her own work meet. She studied at the Higher Institute for Fine Art in Ghent and was a resident at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam and at Atelier Holsboer, Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris. In 2013 she received the de Volkskrant Beeldende Kunst Prijs. In 2014 she was one of three artists selected by the Dutch government to make an official portrait of King Willem-Alexander. Her work is held in the collections of M HKA, Museum Voorlinden, Kunstmuseum Den Haag, Stedelijk Museum Schiedam, Drents Museum and the AkzoNobel Foundation. Photo by Auke Hamers @femmy_otten @mondriaanfonds @naotesukiwashi @legnatec_inc @saga_collective @studio_the_future #creativeresidencysaga

Today, on October 13th, we held the "Shimetate" ritual at Tsumayama Jinja to prepare for the upcoming Okunchi Festival on October 19th.  Joined by visiting artists Rosana Escobar, Femmy Otten (and her family), and Mr. Yamaguchi from SAGA COLLECTIVE, we worked together with our local community to craft sacred straw ropes and tools.  📸 Photo Highlights • Action Scenes: Combing raw rice straw, plaiting the massive rope together, and learning sacred craft techniques (they even mastered the knotting!). Includes the Miyakado-sai ceremony and community gathering. • Group Photo: A wonderful moment shared with everyone after completing the preparations.  Rosana, Femmy, and Mr. Yamaguchi will also join us for the Okunchi Festival on October 19th. We hope this hands-on tradition inspires their artistic journey!

Today, on October 13th, we held the sacred "Shimetate" ritual at Tsumayama Jinja to prepare for our upcoming Autumn Festival ("Okunchi") on October 19th. We were honored to welcome artists Rosana Escobar and Femmy Otten (and her family)—who are currently staying in Saga for a residency program in collaboration with the Netherlands embassy/foundation—along with Mr. Yamaguchi from SAGA COLLECTIVE. Together with our local community, affiliated with the Association of Shinto Shrines, they participated in crafting and installing the traditional Shimenawa (sacred straw ropes).  With their deep artistic focus on natural materials and physical craftsmanship, Rosana and Femmy closely observed and practiced the entire process—from combing the raw rice

— Visual artist Femmy Otten (Amsterdam, 1981) explores both the strength and vulnerability of the human experience through her drawings, paintings, sculptures, murals, and performances. Her work addresses themes such as sexuality, love, motherhood, and childhood—subjects that are deeply personal yet universally relatable. By deliberately pushing boundaries, she invites viewers to reflect on these fundamental aspects of life. You can discover her work at Museum Beelden aan Zee until 1 November. Don’t miss it!
