The HLP Skunk #1 Case Study Report is still available.

It is one piece of a larger body of work from the Humboldt Grace @humboldt.legacy.project , work that brings together preservation, history, science, cultivation, analytical testing, community knowledge, consumer feedback, and ethics.

As this Skunk #1 report series comes to a close, we are moving into what comes next:

Community + Industry Ethics Report
Public Safety Ethics Report
The Synthesis Report (working title)

Each piece adds to the larger record. Together, they help us ask better questions about how we honor the plant, the people, and the culture.

Read the HLP Skunk #1 Case Study Public Summary at www.humboldtgrace.org and find the Full Report through the link in bio.

THE FARMS BEHIND THE DATA. 🌱

The HLP Skunk #1 Grow-Off was built with the participation of multiple cultivators who agreed to grow the same shared plant and contribute information to the research.

Some participants chose to remain private.

These farms agreed to be part of the public record.

Seed 707
Fenario Farms
True Mom & Pop
Empress Farms
Sol Spirit Farm
Talking Trees Farms
Savage Farms Humboldt

We want them to know it matters!

Behind every number in this report was a real farm, a real environment, and people willing to contribute their time, cultivation knowledge and experience to something larger than themselves.

They didn’t just grow a plant.

They helped create a record.

By agreeing to be named publicly, these farms gave us the opportunity to connect you not just to the data but back to the people and places that helped produce it — and to make sure their contribution wasn’t erased from the story.

The Humboldt Legacy Project was never meant to extract knowledge from this community and separate it from the people who created it.

It was built to document it, protect it, and carry it forward.

To every farm that participated — public or private — thank you.

And to these seven farms, thank you for allowing us to say your names. 💜🌱

No one person had everything we needed. Together, we did.

Love & Grace weren’t just our values. They were how this work survived. Our ethical standards.

For six years, the Humboldt Legacy Project brought together people who did not always speak the same language — legacy knowledge holders, farmers, scientists, laboratories, technology partners, businesses, advocates, and community members.

There was no big grant holding it all together.

There was respect. Trust. Listening. Love & Grace.

We learned that collaboration doesn’t require everyone to think the same way. It requires respecting what each person brings to the table — and being willing to listen to each other, and to the plant.

That is how a community-led project with almost no funding kept moving for six years.

And it is also why we believe access to this work matters.

If the cost of the full HLP Skunk #1 Case Study Report is a barrier, we created a waiver so it was accessible for anyone to read .

We want the knowledge created through this work to come back to the people and communities who helped make it possible. That’s why we copyrighted it.

Fill out the waiver. Read the report. Carry the knowledge forward.

THEN WE LET THE PLANT SPEAK.

We documented its history, gave the plants working names, took steps to protect the record, and examined the genetics.

But DNA could only tell us part of the story.

So we added another layer: cultivation.

HLP Skunk #1 No. 3 went into the hands of growers across different farms, environments and cultivation approaches.

29 registered.
11 usable cultivation records returned.
10 samples received laboratory COAs.

We weren’t looking for everyone to produce the same result.

We were listening.

What changed? What stayed consistent? What could the chemistry tell us—and what could we learn from the growers?

The genetics were shared.
The expression was not identical.

Thank you to every grower who participated, including those who chose to remain private, and to the seven who agreed to be publicly acknowledged:

@seed707_llc • @fenariofarms0420 • @truemomandpop • @empressfarms • @solspiritfarm • @talkingtrees.humboldt • @savage__farms__humboldt_co

You didn’t just grow the plant. You helped us listen to it.

Over the next several posts, we’ll share what the plant showed us.

THE SAME GENETICS WERE SHARED.
THE EXPRESSION WAS NOT IDENTICAL.

HLP Skunk #1 was cultivated by participating growers across different farms and environments.

The plants shared a common starting point, but their measured cannabinoid and terpene profiles varied.

That matters.

Genetics provides potential. Environment, cultivation practices, harvest decisions, processing, and other conditions help shape how that potential is expressed.

This is one reason a cannabis plant cannot be fully understood through its name or THC percentage alone.

The Humboldt Legacy Project Skunk #1 Case Study brings together cultivation information, laboratory results, cultivation context, history, DNA-supported lineage research, thiol testing, and consumer responses to create a more complete record of the plant.

But this work also taught us that documentation and science are not enough by themselves.

We need ethics to help guide how evidence is interpreted, how claims are made, who receives credit, whose knowledge is included, who carries the risk, and how value is shared.

That understanding helped lead us into the Humboldt Grace Cannabis Ethics Survey—asking the wider community what responsibilities should guide cannabis as the industry moves forward.

The Skunk #1 Case Study explores what responsible documentation can look like.

The Ethics Survey asks what responsible action should look like next.

Soon, we will begin sharing what the plant revealed.

What can one plant teach an industry?

WHY SKUNK #1?

#Skunk1 is more than a familiar name.

Its history connects cannabis breeding, prohibition, preservation, international movement, modern research, medicine, commerce, and generations of community knowledge.

It also carries many of the questions facing cannabis today:

Who has the authority to identify a cultivar, strain, or vareital ?

What can DNA tell us—and what can it not tell us?

How does the environment shape what a plant expresses?

How should history, knowledge, and stewardship be documented?

Who receives credit when legacy genetics create new value?

The Humboldt Legacy Project chose Skunk #1 as its first case study because following one plant carefully could help us understand the larger systems needed to protect cannabis history, genetics, knowledge, and people.

The full case study is coming soon.

What can one plant teach an industry?
