A lovely way to begin Year 2 of the MA Circular by Design: getting back to basics, getting back to nature 🌱

But most importantly, we were introduced to and joined by the new cohort, heading out into the NCAD Field where we drank nettle tea and harvested woad leaves to prepare as a natural dye.

We stepped over the threshold from the bustling Thomas Street into the calm and grounding "novel" ecosystem of the NCAD Field, welcomed by Gareth Kennedy and Karen Browett @karen_browett

It was lovely to slow down, pay attention and care. Getting back to basics and reconnecting with nature feels like such an important part of circular thinking. The regeneration we see in nature is inspiring. Nature works in cycles: materials are continually transformed and nutrients are returned to the earth. In nature, there is no waste.

Perhaps this is a simple lesson we can take into circular design: rather than accepting waste as an inevitable outcome of a linear system, how can we design it out? How can we create systems where materials remain in circulation, harmful toxins and chemicals are reduced, and regeneration becomes part of the process?

Alongside our great teacher, Mother Nature, we were guided by our other great teachers, Gwen and Maureen.

Looking forward to growing our circular community, learning from one another, and seeing where the next year takes us 🌱

Harvesting Woad

Woad produces blue because its leaves contain a colourless chemical called indican, which transforms into the blue pigment indigotin - the same pigment found in true indigo - through crushing, fermentation and exposure to oxygen.

Only take what you need!

Rule of Thirds - Third for me, third for the plant and third for the animals.
