POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

I want to honour my 1st & last doula mamas of 2022.

Every mama & every birth teaches me something but these two were very different & equally impressive.

Fern was pregnant again after a very traumatic 1st birth. As a yoga teacher who teaches pregnancy yoga, we often fall harder & further when birth isn’t how we know & preach it should be. Fern was a hunter/gatherer during pregnancy acquiring so much information & knowledge especially around pelvic floor, baby position & pushing. However, there comes a point where we have to know that it’s enough. Accepting both the relinquishing of control over & also the surrendering to, a power inside yourself that is an unknowable thing, is for a hunter/gatherer, a hard truth to face & then embody. Fern struggled & pushed through. Man did she do the work.

She hit a point that every mama hits around 36 weeks of self doubt & intense fear about whether she could do it. As a doula I am so relieved when this happens; it is for me the 1st true Transition, the 1st surrender, when she is about to cross the threshold into labour feeling the fear of knowing that this will be her path to walk alone. She is on her way. The inevitability of it can be overwhelming. Shit! I have to do this now? Me?Everything that went wrong 1st time around comes crashing in. The crisis passed. Fern held faith in herself. Her partner saw that & so could truly believe that all would be well. He had complete faith in her. She was ready.

It’s a doula gift when mamas tell you exactly what they will need & how they will be in labour; Fern was one of those. All I had to do was to watch, wait & lean into it. She was magnificent.

Labour was fast & furious as second labours often are, then she looked at me with pure, ecstatic joy & said “I did it!” She had. It wasn’t luck. It healed. It was peaceful. It was affirming. It was hard won. She deserved it. It was an honour to witness her moving, breathing & birthing confidently in her power.

Thank you @fernrossyoga

CALL TO ACTION

Dear spiritual, movement teachers & students, please join @trusselltrust campaign to #keepthelifeline

This Government have made the biggest overnight cut to social security since the Second World War.

Over a million people fear they will be forced to skip meals and switch off their heating this winter as the UK government plans to cut Universal Credit payments by £20 a week from this month.

The £20 uplift was brought in during the pandemic to help those on benefits through the lockdowns. 40% of recipients are in jobs.

In the meantime, they are having to cope with long term physical and mental health effects of COVID, job insecurities, rising energy, food and high childcare costs with no hope to build a better life.

I don’t usually share deeply personal stuff on here but, here goes. My Mum bought us up on her own for a significant part of our lives. She held down a teaching job and looked after three children because my Dad left to pursue his career. Because her salary on its own did not cover her household bills, we were eligible for free school meals and clothing vouchers to buy our uniforms, all second hand. It was a lifeline for us and gave my Mum a helping hand when she needed it most. It was through no fault of her own that my Dad left us to fend for ourselves. He deeply regretted it later in his life. I’ve probably spent a lifetime metabolising the trauma of feeling abandoned.

I’ve had many times in my life where I didn’t know how I was going to pay my rent, buy food or heat my flat. With no savings and with no one to help me out financially, I already felt like shit. What I didn’t need was to be punished further for being poor. When you dismiss a segment of society with labels such as “the unskilled”, “immigrants” or “single mothers” - you strip them of their humanity.

Please let’s stop demonising the vulnerable. It’s toxic behaviour. They need US to campaign for them for a fairer system that lifts them out of poverty and into hope.

There are an estimated 14.3 million people are in poverty in the UK. I find that shocking, don’t you?

If you want a compassionate & fairer society, please get involved.

Thank you for listening. x

Hi yogis! Our focus for August is the neck and shoulders, a much-requested region that often needs TLC.

In class this week we’re working on releasing tension that can accumulate through the day as our shoulders creep ever closer to our ears, often without us even realising it (my teacher @prajnayoga very accurately calls it ‘mind pain’).

We’ll be using props to enhance our awareness of scapular placement, unravelling the side body, where this upward tension can often start. These are three of my current favourite releases.

Classes this week below, if you can’t make the live times let me know and I can send over the recording for you to do at a time that suits you.

$I’ve been trying to look at exercise differently recently - listening to when I’m gravitating to something still and restorative and to when I’m craving something active and high energy. It’s since I worked with Fern @fernrossyoga over the course of a month as she was completing her women’s yoga course. Tuning into my hormone cycle, Fern explained to me that there will be points in your cycle that you lean more towards yin practices (still ones) and points where you’ll look for yang (higher energy). Fern will be able to tell you more about the philosophy (and give you yoga practices to complement your cycle, as she did for me!) but I can tell you that it’s a really refreshing approach. We all need the yin and the yang. Some slower exercise classes I’ve been enjoying alongside are: @nadianarain Monday evening yoga \ Somatic movement with @thehumanmethoduk Some higher energy: @adrienne_ldn workouts on the @fiit app and the @10krc app . . . . . . . . . #womenshealth #yoga #balance #mindbodysoul$
