I went from being sat in West Africa, working remotely as an editorial project manager, to stressing over a delayed invoice that could potentially mess up my plans for an entire month. Very glamorous 🫠

But if I had to choose between the two, I’d still choose the latter. Quitting is A VIBE 🤝🏿

This year has taught me that choosing yourself can never really go wrong, even when the choice is uncomfortable and financially terrifying.

As I celebrate 14 years in the UK and five years as a journalist, I’m realising just how much of this life I never actually planned. These milestones weren’t things I envisioned for myself until much later in life. So being here now, still figuring things out, is another reminder that I’m probably a lot tougher than I think.

I had easily 30 pitches rejected, ignored or dismissed this summer (Not a drill). And honestly, it’s really hard to admit.

But despite that, I’ve had a pretty cool few months:

Press coverage for Afronation with No Sta Djunto

Pitches approved by Black Ballad

A panel at FLILP

Consultancy for Pride of Place

Press coverage for Festival Festeja with Bantumen

Contains Strong Language with the BBC (coming soon)

I’m ridiculously grateful for my friends, colleagues and everyone who has mentioned me, recommended me, invited me into spaces or supported my work. I love you all.

Because behind what looks like a very fabulous and glamorous year, there has also been plenty of anxiety and stress.

I’ll be heading back to university for a Master’s in Political Communication, because apparently being an award-winning journalist wasn’t enough, I also needed to go back to school.

But I’ll also be returning to a 9–5.

And I’m okay with that.

Freelancing can be exciting and freeing, but it can also be scary, daunting and heartbreaking. I’d rather feel secure while doing what I love than become so overwhelmed by the uncertainty that I eventually stop loving it.

Five years in, 14 years in the UK, and I’m still figuring it out. Apparently, I’m not done yet.

If you’ve been feeling the same way, I also wrote about surviving freelance anxiety. Read it, share it or reach out. You’re probably doing better than you think. ❤️
