FOLEGAL Secures Significant Victory in Lagos Pre-Election Dispute

Our Dispute Resolution Team secured a significant victory in a pre-election suit between Hon. Olumuyiwa Owadara (“Our Client”) and INEC & 2 Ors (“the Defendants”), over the wrongful omission of our client’s name from the list of published candidates nominated for the 2027 General Elections.

The brief facts of the case as presented to the court were that our client participated in the Nigeria Democratic Congress’ (“NDC” or “2nd Defendant”) primary election conducted on May 29 2026 for the House of Representatives seat in Oshodi/Isolo Federal Constituency 1, Lagos State and he overwhelmingly won. He was, thereafter, duly nominated as the House of Representative Candidate of NDC in the said constituency for the 2027 General Elections.

Shortly after his nomination, one of his co-contestant in the party primary, Hon Mustapha Okandeji, filed a lawsuit against him to challenge his nomination. While the Firm was busy defending our client’s nomination in Okandeji’s case, on August 1 2026, when INEC published the names of party candidates, it published the name of one Ibrahim Alabi Lukman (“the 3rd Defendant”), who was neither an aspirant nor a candidate of the party.

Resultantly, our team institute a pre-election suit, challenging the wrongful publication of the 3rd Defendant’s name by INEC. In response, INEC agreed that it monitored our client’s primary election. However, INEC insisted that it only published the name that was uploaded or submitted by the NDC.

In a well-considered judgment delivered by Hon Justice Akintayo Aluko on October 20 2026, the court upheld our client’s argument and ruled that having been duly nominated by his party, INEC is bound to publish his name as the candidate of NDC.

The Court consequently nullified the publication of the 3rd Defendant’s name and ordered INEC to immediately publish the name and particulars of Hon. Olumuyiwa Owadara as the NDC candidate for the House of Representatives seat representing Oshodi/Isolo Federal Constituency I in the 2027 General Elections.

My First NBA Conference | 05
The People I Met — New Connections & Reunions 😊

One of my favourite parts of the NBA Conference was seeing people.

Not just meeting new people, but running into people I already knew from different seasons of my life.

The NBA Conference brought so many of them into one place for me. How much better can this get? 😉

Classmates from university and law school.
People I went to secondary school with.
Even @markanthony_ezeoha from primary school, where we were always competing for first position. 😂

I also got to see some of my lecturers from university and law school, including the current DG of the Nigerian Law School, Dr. Odusote, who taught me Property Law, and Dr. Hamid, who taught me Professional Ethics.

And it was interesting to realise how many of these relationships were formed through LAWSAN and CLASFON conferences, Law Clinic competitions, Law School, and even social media.

Different seasons. Different spaces. And years later, we were all in the same place. As lawyers. 😊

So, really, the conference felt like a little reunion to me. It was refreshing to see everyone again — catching up, laughing about old memories and discovering where life has taken us.

Meeting new people is always exciting, but there’s a different kind of joy in seeing familiar faces in a completely different season of life.

Some of the relationships we build along the way have a much longer life than we realise.

I think that’s a huge blessing, and I don’t take it for granted at all.

If this is one of the things I get from attending conferences, sign me up real quick! 👌

Meanwhile, @festusogun took the liberty to show off his wedding ring. Relationship and married people? SMH!
Please help me congratulate him. 😂

P.S Thinking about it now, I didn’t make many new friends or connections. I can’t explain how it happened but we go again next year. 🤭🤞

The Foundation for Digital Justice (FDJ) stands in solidarity with journalist and publisher of ObjecTV Media, Mr. Segun Olawoye, following his invitation by the Police Special Fraud Unit (PSFU), Ikoyi, Lagos, in connection with his reports on the state of road and bridge construction around Oju Ore/Sango-Ota, Ogun State, and the activities of Laralek Construction Company, the company awarded the contract.

Public-interest journalism is essential to a democratic society. When journalists report on projects that directly affect citizens, they must be able to ask questions, investigate, report and demand accountability without fear of intimidation. Journalists must be free to use digital platforms to speak, report, organise and engage on matters of public interest.

FDJ Counsel, Francis Amobi, @nonzysworld was part of the legal team that represented Mr. Olawoye throughout the interrogation process with the Police and secured his release. At FDJ, we remain concerned about the use of cybercrime and online-harassment allegations in matters involving journalism, online expression and public accountability.

We will continue to defend journalists and citizens whose fundamental rights are threatened for speaking, reporting and demanding answers on matters of public interest.

Thirty-seven(37) children have died in the custody of a government security agency.

Their deaths must not become another statistic in Nigeria’s long history of custodial deaths without consequence.
