🍓Wasted🍓
⭐️3.5⭐️

📍 At Home - recorded at Etcetera Theatre

“You only know what’s enough when you know what’s more than enough”

Going into Wasted, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect, but from the opening moments, it was clear this was a production that was going to be different to anything I’d ever seen before.

With a cast of just three, Wasted follows three friends navigating the often messy reality of growing up, coming to terms with adult life on the anniversary of a friend’s death. It captures that feeling of being in your twenties when you’re expected to have things figured out but, in reality, you’re often just trying to work out who you are and where you’re going when it feels like everyone else has somehow got life more together than you have.

What I particularly liked was the way the production explored the difficulty of expressing how you really feel and struggling to put your emotions into words. The way that they showed this struggle whilst the characters were sober compared to when they were wasted and didn’t seem as scared to show their real feelings. The characters’ conversations makes you reflect on the familiar tendency to look at your friends and assume they’re doing better than you, while quietly battling your own insecurities.

The use of spoken rhyme was another interesting element. At moments, the action would pause and the characters would speak in rhyme, creating a different rhythm to the storytelling. Rather than feeling out of place, it broke up the dialogue and offered a new way of expressing the thoughts and feelings that the characters maybe wouldn’t have communicated out loud. It also added another layer to the production and made those moments stand out.

The small but mighty cast were great and I can’t wait to see what they get up to in the future!
