A warm welcome to our third Art for Christmas guest artist: @fgeilinger ⭐️

🩰 Fiona’s lifelong love of dance inspired a fascination with the interaction of the body and fabric in motion, and she spent twelve years making fine art and commercial short films, while developing a painting career alongside.

🖌️ The clothed figure became Fiona’s focal painting subject, and now – after studying the drawing of drapery – she is deepening her investigations into figure and fabric with oil paint.

🖼️ Visit the Studio to see the detail in Fiona’s paintings up close. We are exhibiting A Hand of Fabric 2, and the smaller pieces Centre Fold and Invitation Only. For enquiries, please email natasha@natashaokane.art

Is the freedom of artistic expression understood and protected as part of the broader system of fundamental rights - or not?
How can we support artists who are threatened? Safe spaces for artists must be nurtured!

Not so long ago, we witnessed the New England House, which over the years had grown into an amazing creative hub, being closed down by the Council. Draw got evicted from their studio after 16 years without any other studio to move to. This was a big loss for all the people who had made that place into this lively, creative collaborative space.
It is a disgraceful act of cultural vandalism.

𝗔𝗥𝗧𝗜𝗦𝗧 𝗙𝗢𝗖𝗨𝗦: 𝗙𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮 𝗚𝗲𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿

Fiona divides her time between Brighton, UK and Emila Romagna, Italy. @fgeilinger

In London, after a Contemporary Dance and Choreography BA, she spent ten years in broadcast television, as a Picture Editor and Presentation Director.

Moving to Brighton in 1998 she studied Garden Design & History working as a freelance Garden Designer. A passion for the drawing element in her work led to a pupillage with painter Nick Bodimeade and subsequent change of direction.

An MA in Art and Design at Brighton University making short films allowed her to explore her diverse skills and experience, bringing together dance, photography, moving-image, design, drawing & adding motion-graphics. She achieved a distinction & developed a complimentary career making fine art & commercial short films in a bold graphic style that combined drawing, fabric and pattern with the silhouetted moving body; threads that would continue through her work. ‘Wallpaper’ featured in the BFI film festival 2011.

Fiona’s painting career developed alongside this: initially working with acrylics on wooden panels, her focal subject was the clothed figure. Her paintings are informed by a keen interest in art history, fashion & dance. A highlight of 2023 was being selected for the Royal Academy Summer Show.
Since 2024 Fiona has been studying at ESOP on Painting Year ll , under inspiring and expert tutors @guy_allott & @rosannadeanart

Working in oils, she is exploring how fabric and skin can find equivalence in this medium, deepening her knowledge of colour and technique to make this rendering more sophisticated and powerful. By painting on canvas and at a larger scale, she is finding the bigger movements required to explain the contours of figure and cloth are leading her in new and inspiring directions. She also appreciates the opportunity to exchange thoughts and ideas with the experienced, generous and interesting students on the course.

The Painting Year II Tuesdays with Guy Allott and Rosanna Dean

“We continued working on our on-going glazing project, exploring cool and warm tones, mixing colour through thin layers of paint that sit on top of each other, making oil paint rich and jewel like… then to partner with something quite different, alongside this, everyone leapt into large scale paintings 2 x 1.5m, considering the physicality of brush marks, as traces of feelings and thoughts, and how we arrange and compose them rhythmically within the constraints of the canvas.’ @rosannadeanart
