To imagine without proof, to let something be beautiful before I know why. To me, that’s the best way to exist. #thoughts -

DARLING ANN ROBINSON, mentor and friend. Introducing 2026 Arts Foundation Te Tumu Toi Icon Whakamana Hiranga Ann Robinson ONZM.

‘The Icon Whakamana Hiranga Award recognises the extraordinary lifetime achievement and impact these outstanding creatives have made in shaping the cultural landscape of Aotearoa New Zealand’ @theartsnz

@annrobinson4444 ‘Ann Robinson ONZM is Aotearoa New Zealand’s leading practitioner of cast glass. Trained in sculpture at Elam School of Fine Arts, she began her career at Auckland’s Sunbeam Glass Works before pioneering the lost-wax casting technique in glass - a method now followed by cast glass artists around the world. Her luminous vessels, pods, and leaf forms draw on the native flora of Aotearoa and the sharp, clear quality of New Zealand light. A sought-after teacher at the Pilchuck Glass School and the Corning Studio, her work is held in collections including the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Corning Museum of Glass, the National Gallery of Victoria, and Te Papa Tongarewa. Ann was appointed a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2001, received an Arts Foundation Te Tumu Toi Laureate Award in 2004, and the American Glass Art Society’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006’.

@mikecrawfordglass and I @layla_walter_glass had the pleasure of joining Ann for this special ceremony with family. We are so grateful to Ann for the rich learning ground her Karekare studio was. We are like family. It’s been a privilege to have worked alongside Ann (1996-2011), to have shared a studio (2008-2022) and many moments in her journey. The portrait of Ann was taken at Karekare with the white kaka beak plants behind her, which she grew from seed.

This vessel, Antipodean Bowl, was first designed for the 1988 Serville Expo. A project masterminded by The Dowse Director James Mack @thedowse In 2007 Ann and her assistants Mike, Hannah and I were featured in ‘The Gift Exchange’ a Dowse exhibition about how creative inspiration is passed on.

Thanks Ann for all the life lessons, a lifetime of glasswork, technical expertise and conversations.

In a special twist of fate (and an affirmation of the value of hand crafted objects), Ann’s partner the late John Edgar made the icon awards (the pins recreated by Dr Areta Wilkinson), making it an emotional moment as Her Excellency Dame Cindy Kiro adorned Ann with her pin.

It was a warm hearted evening with engaging speeches from the four Icons. Affirming the importance of the arts and artists for the wellbeing of society, the value of supporters of the arts and the need for government to clearly consider and support the arts and arts policy.

CONGRATULATIONS ANN ROBINSON
Introducing 2026 Arts Foundation Te Tumu Toi Icon Whakamana Hiranga Ann Robinson ONZM.

The Icon Whakamana Hiranga Award recognises the extraordinary lifetime achievement and impact these outstanding creatives have made in shaping the cultural landscape of Aotearoa New Zealand.

Ann Robinson is Aotearoa New
Zealand’s leading cast glass artist.
Trained at Elam School of Fine Arts, she pioneered lost-wax glass casting, now used worldwide. Her nature-inspired forms sit in the Victoria & Albert Museum, Corning Museum, and Te Papa Tongarewa. Read more about Ann and the Icon Awards via the link in bio @theartsnz

On 6th August 2026 at Government House The Arts Foundation welcomed four new artists into their living circle of 20 Icon Whakamana Hiranga - Ann Robinson ONZM, Darcy Nicholas QSO, The Topp Twins, and Witi Ihimaera Smiler DCNZM QSM (images 7-9). Ana Iti received the 2025 Harriet Friedlander Residency (last image).

Established in 2003 by former Arts Foundation Te Tumu Toi Chair Sir Eion Edgar and Jan, Lady Edgar, the Icon Whakamana Hiranga award.

Each incoming Icon receives a bronze medallion set with pounamu and pin designed by sculptor John Edgar. This year’s pins have been remade by 2024 Laureate Dr Areta Wilkinson using John’s mould. The pin is theirs to keep - while the medallion is engraved with their name, and on their passing, entrusted to a future Icon so that a circle of 20 living Icons endures.

In a special twist of fate (and an affirmation of the value of hand crafted objects), Ann’s long term partner is the late John Edgar, making it an emotional moment as Her Excellency Dame Cindy Kiro adorned Ann with her pin. It was a warm hearted evening with engaging speeches from the four Icons. Affirming the importance of the arts and artists for the wellbeing of society, the value of supporters of the arts and the need for government to clearly consider and support the arts and arts policy.

Day three @cloudstone_artist_residency .

I’m grateful for the time and space to paint. Opportunities like this are rare, and I never take them for granted. Having @bettina_askounis here has been just as rewarding. It’s a reminder that part of this practice is making space for others to learn.

Mick Jagger just turned 83. Amazing #. It reminds me that making anything worthwhile takes time and resilience. Being creative can make any grown person cry, it’s not an easy gig!
This photo was totally in a moment of me leaving the studio, not a staged, it’s me. Adore @jessica_maurer_photography

Some days confirm everything. I spent today with painter @antonia.perricone and this is why I choose to work with artists. There is the delicate crafting of films and photographs, yes; but the real magic is being in the presence of a fabulous human, co-creating, feeling pumped, rejuvenated, excited by the beauty of the world around us.

I call this part of my studio ‘The Magic Room’ It’s the space where my practice really began, and over the years I have had lots of people come and go through it, each leaving their own mark. Now it’s time to bring it back into my studio and make it part of my workspace again. It feels like the right time for a fresh start.

This book has lived in my studio for years, I ordered it in the German language as you do, lol me. It is not my native language. When I feel like I’m not moving fast enough, I pull it off the shelf and quietly flick through the pages. I don’t read it. I just look at the studios, the paintings, the lives that were built over decades. It reminds me that every artist started somewhere. They kept showing up. They kept making the work.So I close the book, put it back on the shelf, and get back to painting.

It’s that simple.
