🏀 ON THE RISE | ALYSSA RODRIGUEZ 🇦🇺🇵🇭

From learning the fundamentals to representing the Philippines on the international stage. What a journey! 🔥

Unlike many elite athletes, Alyssa didn’t come through years of high-level junior basketball competition. Her journey was built on hard work, determination and countless hours of training.

Under the guidance of Coach Mic Salon at MIC Academy, Alyssa trained almost every day, developing her skills, confidence and understanding of the game.

She also trained alongside Jaz Salon, another accomplished MIC Academy student whose journey from Keilor Thunder’s VJBL, VYC and NBL1 programs has taken her to NCAA basketball in the USA.

And the results speak for themselves!

🏀 Keilor Thunder — VJBL, VYCW & NBL1 Development Player
🏀 Victoria Navy — U20 State Representative
🇵🇭 Gilas Pilipinas U18 — FIBA Asia Cup 2024
🇵🇭 Gilas Pilipinas U21 3x3 — FIBA Nations League 2026
🇵🇭 Gilas Pilipinas Women’s Team — FIBA Pre-Olympic Qualifiers 2026
🔵 Ateneo Blue Eagles — UAAP 2026

From humble beginnings to achieving what many young athletes can only dream of.

Alyssa’s journey reflects Coach Mic Salon’s player development philosophy at MIC Academy — building strong fundamentals, investing time and helping young athletes reach their potential.

Of course, none of this would have been possible without Alyssa’s own discipline, commitment and willingness to improve.

Her story proves that it’s not where you start, but how hard you’re willing to work to get there.

Behind her remarkable journey is also a powerful example of what dedicated mentorship can achieve — Coach Mic’s belief, guidance and commitment helped turn Alyssa’s potential into international success.

An incredible achievement for Alyssa, a proud moment for Coach Mic and MIC Academy, and an inspiration to the next generation of Filipino-Australian basketball players! 💙

🏀 MIC BASKETBALL AUSTRALIA | ON THE RISE 📈

From Australian junior basketball to taking his game to the USA — meet Benjamin James Solomon.

Benjie’s basketball journey has been built across domestic, representative and international competition. After progressing through St John’s Jaguars, Frankston Bobcats, Cranbourne Eagles and Berwick Panthers, he moved through the representative pathway with the Frankston Blues and Casey Cavaliers, collecting two U16 representative championships and an U16 MVP along the way.

An important part of Benjamin’s development has also been the guidance and mentorship of Coach Marvin Lugtu, who has worked with him throughout his basketball journey, helping develop his game and prepare him for the challenges of competing at higher levels.

His journey with MIC Basketball Australia has also been a memorable one. Benjamin was part of our 14U team that won the 2024 NBTC / Manila Live Championship 🏆🇵🇭, before returning to represent MIC at 16U in 2026.

He has also competed internationally with Team AUSA at the PUMA NXT Pro Tournament in both 2025 and 2026.

Now Benjamin has taken another major step in his basketball journey, moving to the United States and joining The Linsly School Varsity Basketball program for the 2026/27 season, transitioning into the small forward / power forward positions.

From the local courts in Australia, to representing MIC in the Philippines, and now continuing his development in the USA — Benjie’s journey is only getting started. 🇦🇺🇵🇭🇺🇸

Another young player whose journey we’ve been fortunate to be part of, and one we’ll continue watching as he takes on his next challenge.

🏀 MIC BASKETBALL AUSTRALIA | COACH FOCUS

A championship coach, player developer and mentor committed to helping the next generation reach their potential.

Next in our Coach Focus series is Coach Marvin Lugtu, whose impact stretches from representative basketball in Victoria to championship success with MIC Basketball Australia in the Philippines.

A 2024 Manila Live / NBTC Champion Head Coach, Marvin has built his coaching journey around developing players, building competitive teams and preparing athletes for the next level — both on and off the court.

Coach Marvin brings valuable experience from the Victorian basketball system, including two years as a Representative Head Coach with the Casey Cavaliers, as well as coaching domestically with the Cranbourne Eagles.

With MIC Basketball Australia, Marvin has taken charge of both our 14U and 16U teams. One of his standout achievements came in 2024, when he led our 14U team to the Manila Live / NBTC Championship in the Philippines. 🏆🇵🇭

Beyond team coaching, Marvin is the Founder and Lead Coach of MTC, a basketball skills and strength & conditioning academy.

Marvin’s experience across representative basketball, international competition and individual player development represents exactly what our Coach Focus series is about — highlighting the quality coaches within our program who share a common goal of developing the next generation of Filipino-Australian basketball players.

We’re proud to have Coach Marvin Lugtu as part of the MIC Basketball Australia coaching family.

🏀 ON THE RISE | PLAYER FEATURE SERIES

We begin On The Rise with someone who was there since day one. Diego Nuque-Bautista, a young player whose basketball journey has already taken him across Australia, the Philippines and international competition.

Diego has been part of MIC Basketball Australia at NBTC Manila Live for the past 3 years, while also developing through Keilor Thunder’s VJBL playing VC. In 2025, he was part of Western Heights College’s Foot Locker 15U Australian Schools National Championship team.

His journey has also given him opportunities to compete beyond Australia, including the World Youth Championship, Asia Pacific in Singapore, Elite Basketball Circuit in the USA, and Global Hoops in 2026.

Today, Diego continues the next chapter of his journey in the Philippines with Ateneo de Manila University’s 16U UAAP basketball team. 🇵🇭🏀

Behind all the basketball, Diego credits his family as his biggest inspiration — their support motivates him to keep working, push through challenges and continue becoming a better player.

From Australia to the Philippines, his journey is still being written.

🏀 MIC RANDOM REWIND | 12U MAGPIES 🇵🇭

A throwback to our 12U Magpies during last year’s NBTC / Manila Live Philippines Tour, pictured after a practice game against Xavier High School.

What makes this moment even more memorable is that the two teams would meet again later in the actual tournament — with our Magpies coming away with the win on both occassion. 💙🏀

Games like these are exactly why we value our Philippines tours. It’s not just about the tournament itself, but the preparation, the competition, the experiences and the memories our young players bring home with them.

Leading this group was Coach Savin Lopez, one of the highly accomplished coaches within our program who continues to coach at a high level here in Australia.

👀 Keep an eye out for Coach Savin’s upcoming COACH FOCUS feature, where we’ll share more about his coaching journey, experience and contribution to the development of our players.
