Peter Fury helped take Rico Verhoeven—a world-class kickboxer with only one professional boxing match—to the brink of the greatest upset in combat sports history against Undisputed Heavyweight Champion Oleksandr Usyk.

Listen to what he emphasizes: BOXING. And REST.

That philosophy comes from years of training fighters and understanding what makes boxing different.

Boxing is the art of hitting and not being hit.

Over 12 rounds, that requires:

• Timing and distance
• Positioning and balance
• Rhythm and defense
• Footwork and angles
• Reactions and ring IQ
• Adjustments and efficiency

It requires skill, coordination, relaxation, rhythm and flow. Being pliable—not rigid. Smooth—not constantly explosive.

Strength and explosiveness can have value. But they are not required to hit and not be hit.

With that being said, the real question is: What are you giving up to develop them?

If extra training gives you a 1% increase in strength or explosiveness, is it worth the time, energy and recovery taken away from developing the skills that make you a better boxer?

And if you pursue a substantially greater increase, what is the additional trade-off?

More training means less recovery and energy available for skill development.

A fighter can only absorb so much quality work.

Instead of asking, “What else can we add?” ask:

“What can we take away so the boxer can do more high-quality BOXING?”

You may become stronger and more explosive, but if you sacrifice rhythm, timing, positioning, defensive reactions, efficiency, flow—and REST—you may actually move further away from reaching your potential as a boxer.

Master BOXING so you can maximize the athleticism you already have.

Sometimes the smartest thing you can do isn’t add another workout.

It’s giving the fighter enough REST to do better BOXING tomorrow.
