Am grateful to my father, physically gone for 33 years, for so very much, not least of which is my Venezuelan heritage and a different way of interpreting life. A quote from Ortega y Gasset, one of his favorite philosophers, “The will to be oneself is heroism. “

Happy Celestial Birthday to my dad, who would be 108 today. Don’t let that 70s decor mislead- this was in the 80s in our Gables home. Maybe they’re all celebrating together- differences transcended in the beyond - maybe he’s playing chess with an Angel.

My vivacious maternal grandmother would have been 127 today. She was mellow, but prone to fits of rage if denied her evening martini and cigarette by my dictatorial mother, who doted on her. In the first photo she’s with my Aunt Candy- who passed away in her late 50s. In the second photo, having had a stroke, she’s fragile, and flanked by my mother and mischievous cousin Philip, who she raised and adored. Grandma danced a mean merengue and made a spectacular chicken fricassée.

It has been two years since you left, Mom. I have kept on keeping on, thanks to the love you gave me while you could, and to the memory of your exemplary strength of character. You were an excellent mother after all. I’m sure you see that I’ve come to realize that. Love you with my heart and soul.

Happy Bday to my brother @figuremimages - so grateful for you especially since Mom left- your support has been unwavering. Have a great time celebrating you, life, love - all of it. P.S. I had to include some of your shots in your Bday reel- what I could quickly forage... no fastidious curation involved.

It’s my Alex’s birthday today. The years go by but in our minds they don’t. Celebrating this wonderful guy always.
1. Alex and Caroline his girlfriend.
2. Alex and his uncle Mike, at 4, the age I always see him in my mind.
