You can’t always explain it. Sometimes, it’s just a feeling.

Designed as a gathering place.

Inspired by the idea of an internal courtyard, the skylight above the large indoor tree creates a central moment within the space. Surrounded by seating, the planter introduces a calming moment of relief and greenery while connecting the lounge, cafe, retail, and upper level. Together, these spaces create an environment where people can gather, work, discover, and spend time together.

A sneak peek of East County Library — @multnomahcountylibrary’s newest flagship location in Gresham, Oregon. Mayer/Reed designed signage standards for the entire library network, creating system-wide cohesion and increasing accessibility and inclusivity through multilingual and icon-based wayfinding. For a special touch at the new flagship, we developed custom concrete letters cast into board form concrete to mark the main entries (a collaboration with @figureplant).

The new East County Library provides an impressive 95,000 square feet of learning, play and connection, including a 200-seat auditorium, maker space, indoor/outdoor children’s play area, teen room, audiovisual studio, sensory rooms and a rooftop terrace with a view. Come celebrate the grand opening of this wonderful new community hub on Saturday, May 16th!

Had a blast working with a bunch of talent on this project for @its_just_a_feeling_space.

The whole transformation of this building by @physicalspace.co was pretty stunning. They trusted me to add a few pieces of furniture and they even trusted my opinions with a few design thoughts!

Go say hello if you’re in Portland and need a space to work, a cold brew, or some retail therapy.

If you’re flying into town, feel free to land your plane on our massive Maple coffee table in their lounge area.

In 2016, Figure Plant began the process to restore the famous Paul Bunyan at the end of Denver Ave. in the Kenton neighborhood. I was involved in those early investigations of core sampling and color swatching. Paul is on the historic register, so we were required to exactly match his colors. This was not ideal, because his denim color was not a very eye catching shade. Pale and drab. It took quite some time to jump through the civic hoops to perform this restoration. Sometime after my departure from Figure Plant, they were able to prove that the colors Paul was donning were actually quite faded, and they were able to decipher that the original denim blue was much more vibrant. Hurray!

Yesterday, Charlinda @black.heart.coop Co-Owner and Executive Creative, had the pleasure of meeting David Fredrickson, the owner and founder of @figureplant, a Portland-based studio specializing in innovative experiences, installation pieces, and immersive events.

A few days prior, Charlinda witnessed one of their original designed concepts in person at the @project_pabst Music Fest on the waterfront in downtown Portland, which made the upcoming tour at Figure Plant more exciting.

Touring their studio and seeing both ongoing and completed projects was truly inspiring. Charlinda shared, “It was wonderful to bond with David over our shared roots in creative storytelling from theater. Figure Plant’s dedication to transforming creative ideas into physical realities aligns perfectly with our values at Black Heart. I’m thrilled about the possibility of future collaborations as Black Heart continues to grow and brings AR/VR experiences, video production, animation, and motion graphics to our in-person event projects.”

Thank you again to the folks at Figure Plant. We can’t praise their team and work enough. Let’s keep pushing the boundaries of creativity together!

Special shout out to @diecharles for making the connection!
