Join us tonight, Saturday, September 19, for the opening reception of El Poder Del Ser: Ni de Aquí, Ni de Allá by @film.dispatch from 7-10PM at @espacio_arista1701

El Poder Del Ser is organized as part of Intercambio/Exchange, a collaborative partnership between Bread & Salt Gallery in San Diego, California, and Arista 1701, a contemporary art space located in Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico.

Engaging the exterior billboard at Arista 1701 and incorporating a short film in the interior gallery space, El Poder Del Ser is a visual and sonic project about the migrant condition, the feeling of not fully belonging to the country left behind nor the one arrived in. Told through La Rumorosa, the mountain highway connecting Tijuana and Mexicali, the road becomes both a literal route and a spiritual threshold. Ni de Aquí, Ni de Allá—“neither from here, nor from there”—names the emotional condition at the center of the project: the in-between state of someone who has crossed a border and left a piece of themselves on both sides. This body of work is about connection beyond geography: values, memory, tradition, and inherited ways of being that travel with a person even when the land they come from does not.

Join Bread & Salt Gallery tonight at Arista 1701, Av. Mariano Arista 1701, Nueva, 21100 Mexicali, B.C., Mexico from 7-10PM.

Thanks to the team at Arista 1701 for their partnership and collaboration on this install, and some great behind the scenes footage!

Thank you to @breadandsalt_sandiego for believing in us and helping bring this dream to life.

I’ve always been obsessed with out-of-home artwork, from billboards to large-scale installations. Seeing our work displayed at my home away from home in Mexicali, @espacio_arista1701, feels surreal.

September 19, we’re heading to Mexicali, eating Chinese food, celebrating, and making a little more history.

Short film coming soon.

WHAT THE HECK IS A DEAKINIZER?

Some lenses are designed to be technically perfect.

Others are designed to make you feel something.

Roger Deakins’ custom Deakinizer lenses aren’t about chasing perfection—they’re about chasing emotion. They soften the clinical edge of modern digital cameras, adding character, texture, and a subtle organic quality that serves the story instead of distracting from it.

That philosophy says everything about Roger as a filmmaker. @team.deakins

At this year’s Cinema is Power event in San Diego, we didn’t just get to hear from one of the greatest cinematographers of all time—we got a glimpse into the creative tools and thought process behind the images that have inspired filmmakers for decades.

A huge thank you to @film.dispatch, @Sunnysidemp, @sandiegofilmequipment for coming together to help make this event possible. Bringing our filmmaking community together to learn from artists like Roger is exactly how we continue to grow stronger.

Because at the end of the day...

It’s never just about the lens.

It’s about the story the lens helps you tell.

WHAT THE HECK IS Filmic?

There are moments that remind us why we fell in love with cinema.

Not because of the cameras.
Not because of the gear.
But because of the people.

This year’s Cinema is Power in San Diego is one of those moments—a celebration of storytelling, artistry, and the community that keeps independent filmmaking alive. To hear legendary cinematographer Roger Deakins share his journey is a rare gift, but what makes this event truly special is seeing our local filmmaking community come together under one roof.

We’re incredibly grateful that @film.dispatch, @Sunnysidemp, @sandiegofilmequipment could join forces to help support an event that reminds us what this industry is really about: lifting one another up, sharing knowledge, and inspiring the next generation of storytellers.

Every conversation...
Every handshake...
Every new collaboration...
Every story waiting to be told...

That’s where the real power of cinema lives.

Here’s to building a stronger filmmaking community in San Diego—one frame, one friendship, and one film at a time.
