Fabrio Issue 4: Heartland

Heartland has officially launched! It has been an absolute pleasure serving as editor-in-chief and I am so proud of what we’ve put together.

This issue exists because I needed it to. As a queer American, I grew up searching for my reflection in the media I consumed and only found fragments. Heartland is my attempt to fill that gap — to tell the story of LGBTQ+ Americans and give space to voices that have been written out of the narrative. By reworking iconic Americana tropes and figures, this issue is an unapologetic celebration of living authentically in the face of systemic oppression.

Creating Heartland was a liberating experience and I am indebted to the community it has brought me. From that connection grew a sense of collectivism that now feels essential. These days, the world feels like it is collapsing inward on itself. However, I keep coming back to art and the proof that humanity is still here.

To my team — your support and dedication mean the world to me. Thank you for trusting me with my vision and for helping me bring it to life. And to my immigrant parents, who taught me that building something from nothing is possible, this is for you. 🫶

Shadows of Our Souls (2025)

This year has truly marked a shift in my relationship with photography. After getting my beloved Ricoh and spending a semester abroad, my love for the medium was revitalized. When I got back to Boston, I decided to push myself further and be part of photoshoots and magazine work.

Back in late September, I was assigned to my first shoot of the year—and my first-ever shoot with actual models, directors, and a full production setup. I was excited, but also super nervous.

Right before—like genuinely 10 minutes before getting to CAS—I figured out an effect on my camera that let me layer frames on top of one another, creating a double (or multi) exposure. I love my camera so much.

[goodbye otc!]

i have been dreading making this post for many reasons - it is more than just a goodbye to this special magazine - the place that has fueled my creative side, the escapism from all my other academic tasks and the mundane chores, and the thing i look forward to the most during the week. i can’t even begin to talk about my journey in otc, having joined and applied for the mag even before i came into bu, and i leave it behind in the good hands of the people i have came met and crossed 🫶

this semester has been so utterly challenging and we have taken the magazine across many types of experimentations:
1. first b&w shoot shot almost all on 35mm film!! and some digitals for extras, this was unanimously most of eboards fav shoots because it was so challenging but came out so gooood
2. having a big pa team led by @10bekaa !!!!! designed our own otc fries and cola logos for machine of consumption AND GURLIE ALSO MADE SPAGHETTI IN MYLES KITCHEN? like we had the best head of production
3. blew up not one or two BUT THREE big mattresses at a park when it was rainy and had the models be drained in mud and shit by the end but at least there was pizza 🍕
4. ALSO BUILT A DOLLHOUSE FROM SCRATCH? i rlly dont know how that happened and how we did it but we did and all the photogs and videgos and pas in that shoot were amazing,,, and styling for center of it all had such great synergy and chemistry together,, we did it despite the time limitations!!!!

we had ideas and we put them all out and all these crazy wild ideas couldnt come into fruition without my magazine soulmates @zoekmccarthy and @evafournel_ whom i love so much. AND YALL EVA IS STEPPING UP and she’s gonna make otc bigger and better than this year than everevereverever hehe otc is in such good hands and i just dont know how to live my next year not doing anything related to it 🥲 thank u to the greatest eboard team ever that i’ve had the pleasure of working with but spotlighting ian, jas, tenbeka & julia whom i’ve mostly directly coordinated with the semester thank u for ur energy and for making my job as co cd so much more enjoyable ❤️❤️
