The Art of the Creative Bank Account

For the longest time, we’ve treated the creative life like a wild, untamable art form—one where we pour our souls into our craft and just cross our fingers that the bills somehow get paid.

Last month, I stepped into a room that completely challenged that narrative: The Creative Money Conversation.

As someone behind the lens, my job is usually to capture the energy of a space—the focus in a speaker's eyes, the nods of agreement in the crowd, the quiet epiphanies happening in real time. But this session hit differently. Sitting there with my camera, I wasn't just documenting an event; I was taking notes on my own future

I’m still figuring out wealth.
But I’m building the systems, asking the questions, and having the conversations that make it possible.

This is Canvas & Capital.

A recent GOBankingRates survey showed that 9 out of 10 people have a checking account. But despite the familiarity, the question of how much cash one should have in an account remains a personal finance mystery for many…….

Money doesn't become less important because you're a creative.

If anything, the more your creative career grows, the more important it becomes to understand what happens beyond the work.

That's why we're bringing Anne into the room at The Creative Money Conversation (TCMC).

Anne brings her expertise to a conversation we're having more intentionally at Canvas & Capital:

What does it actually mean to build a financially sustainable creative career?

From understanding your financial responsibilities to making better decisions with what you earn, this is a conversation every creative should be thinking about.

On August 26th, we're bringing 40 creatives and three facilitators together in Lagos to have that conversation offline.

Admission is free.

If you're building a career around your creativity, register through the link in our bio.

We've been talking about it online.
Now, let's have the conversation in the room.

The creative economy is growing. But are we teaching creatives what to do with the money they make?

A photographer can have a ₦2m month and a ₦200k month.

A filmmaker can land a major project and then go months without one.

A designer can build a thriving business and still have no clear system for taxes, protection, savings, investments, or long-term wealth.

And somewhere along the way, we started treating this as normal.

I don't think it has to be.

That's part of the reason we're bringing The Creative Money Conversation (TCMC) to life on August 26th in Lagos.

This isn't just another financial seminar.

It's a room built specifically around the realities of creative careers.

We'll be talking about:

→ Taxes
→ Building structure around your creative business
→ Managing irregular income
→ Protecting what you've built
→ Investing and long-term wealth
→ And the questions creatives are often afraid to ask about money.

But there's another reason we're doing this.

We're listening.

We're trying to understand what African creatives actually need financially and build the products, community and partnerships that can answer those needs.

So if you're a creative, this conversation isn't just something you should attend.

Your voice is part of what we're building.

When money is tight, it’s easy to feel trapped and helpless and hopeless. There’s no escaping it: You finally pay off a big bill, and the next one shows up in your mailbox. You turn to credit cards to stay afloat, but those bills pile up, too. And just when you think you’re in the clear BOOM.….

THE CREATIVE MONEY CONVERSATION

We spend years learning how to become better at our craft.

How to take better pictures.

How to tell better stories.

How to build better brands.

How to get better clients.

But there is another conversation that doesn't happen often enough:

What happens to the money we make from the work?

What happens when the bookings slow down?

What happens when illness keeps you from working?

What happens when your equipment gets stolen?

What happens when you start earning more but somehow still don't feel financially secure?

And perhaps the biggest question:

How do you turn creative income into lasting wealth?

This is why we're creating The Creative Money Conversation.

An intimate session bringing together creative professionals for honest conversations around income, taxes, financial structure, wealth, protection, and the future of creative work.

No generic financial lectures.

No "get rich quick" promises.

Just real conversations about the money behind the work.
