I didn’t just want this role. I needed it.

This weekend was my final weekend playing the Witch in Into the Woods.

When I decided to audition, it wasn’t just because I wanted to get back on stage. It wasn’t just because I missed theater or wanted the challenge of playing a role like this.

I needed something that was mine.

Becoming a mom has been one of the most incredible experiences of my life, but somewhere between being Jonah’s mom, running Iron Family, being a wife, coaching, managing a home, and taking care of everyone and everything around me, it became really easy to forget about the parts of me that existed before all of those responsibilities.

Theater gave me one of those pieces back.

For a few hours, I wasn’t Mom. I wasn’t the gym owner. I wasn’t answering emails, solving problems, making decisions, or thinking about what needed to happen next.

I got to be the Witch.

I got to sing. Perform. Be ridiculous. Challenge myself. Spend time with people who had absolutely nothing to do with the gym or motherhood. And I got to do something simply because it brought me joy.

And I needed that more than I realized.

As a new mom, I’m learning that taking care of my mental health sometimes means intentionally finding the things that remind me I’m still a whole person outside of motherhood.

Jonah is one of the greatest parts of my life. Iron Family is a massive part of who I am. But neither of those things has to be my entire identity.

This show gave me permission to find Theresa again.

So after my final weekend, I’m incredibly grateful. Grateful for this role. Grateful for this cast. Grateful for my family who made it possible for me to do this. And really freaking grateful that I gave myself permission to do something simply because it made me happy.

Sometimes you don’t realize how badly you needed something until you have to say goodbye to it.
