For @shado.mag, I interviewed the AMAZING Vincent Martell (@vincentmartell), a filmmaker and the Founder/CEO of VAM studio (@vamstudioofficial), an award-winning production company behind Finesse (@finesseontv), starring the LEGENDARY @sheacoulee

Vincent and I had an incredibly healing conversation about love, vulnerability, shame, family, community and identity. I share some of the lessons I learnt during our discussion in this article.

Such BEAUTIFUL photos by: @a8lia

Don’t forget to check out the What Can You Do section where I plug amazing sources, like @_busybeingblack with @_joshrivers, and the amazing episode with @puert0rico on Isaac Julien’s Looking for Langston.

Thank you @shado.mag for this incredible feature. What a beautiful pen you have @adebayoqa. The intentionality and extensive research had me deep in my emotions.

To be real, I haven’t felt much like celebrating myself or my art after my Uncle Greg passed last month. He was the first man to acknowledge my queerness and loved me like I was his son. Reading @adebayoqa’s words reminded me how important it is to be present and to celebrate your journey everyday. This month I’m picking myself up so I can continue to make him, and so many others proud of how far I’ve come. Grateful to you all for being apart of my journey. If you love me or my work please read and share this piece. Here’s the quote that got me:

“I realised that in years to come, as we have discussed Hughes, Baldwin and their peers, Vincent will be discussed as an ancestor that has motivated the creativity of people that come after him.”
