BigTrip Days 62 - 64: A Uyghur Remontada 🇨🇳

After the strife and turmoil of the last of the Kyrgyz hitch, being ill and with a broken laptop it was going to take a lot to turn round the mood. And to do it fast seemed fruitless.

Weekend turned to weekday and trucks started crawling over the Sino-Kyrgyz frontier at Irktashem. Amongst the first contingent of pedestrians it was a relatively smooth process on the Kyrgyz side, and a relatively painful one on the Chinese. Entire bag searched through , all clothes in my neat little 40L system unfolded and heaped upon the soapy, milky smelling Osprey.

I counted my passport was checked *13* times from arriving at the Chinese immigration office to walking through my hostel door. There’s no messing about in Xinjiang when it comes to us 为国人 (foreigners).

Still with a poor stomach and anticipating a course of antibiotics or worse i took leave to enjoy a couple beers after a strenuous couple of days, and had the best shower and shave of my life. Despite even the shower being direct over the squat toilet.

7 hours of the following day was spent in Kashgar No1 Peoples Uyghur hospital, where the staff were more interesting in my being there than my issues. Oddly, my tests came back clean. Even more confused than when I began.

Ive met some great people here in Kashgar, and combined with the excitement of being in a new place, cheap delicious food, 70p beers, and silly electric scooters its been the medicine the hospital couldn’t prescribe. Even my stomach too, after 3 weeks, has started to realise it.

Onward, further into Northern Xinjiang! 🇨🇳

Day 25

A highly emotional day as both kids were moving on… Nelly back home to Australia, and Finn on to Tashkent…my eyes are red from multiple tears….such a privilege to have travelled altogether in this incredible country….such an enormous gift to be together and share such special memories…I’m so so grateful that they both said ‘yes!’ to the mayhem and random good chaos that evolved out of a very scant plan….in Kyrgyzstan there are no bad directions… the entire nation is bursting with mountains, nature, alpine vistas and flowers, random herds of horses, flocks of sheep, cows, donkeys, marmots….

Our journey together was full to the brim of action and new, unique experiences that will live in our memories forever.

Thank you to Finn and Neroli. I don’t have enough words to express my gratitude…they were both on time crunches, but said yes anyway… knowing that this experience was going to be challenging (not your standard ‘holiday’)… and thank you for Sailumai Tash…what an incredible memory…the richest experiences often come from the biggest hardships right?!

Ok, I’d better stop….I was sad and happy.. big red eyes….grateful for the ‘yes’ and sad to see them go… but proud of them at the same time… such awesome human beings….miss them soooooo much already!!
