✨Artist Announcement✨Fiona Troon

Fiona will be leading the first session of the day, massed ensemble, where we will be getting stuck in to her new piece “Shifting Fifty” which has been commissioned to celebrate the CASSGB’s fiftieth anniversary.

“Shifting Fifty” explores divisions of the number fifty through
numerical phrase structures and polytonal themes of celebration.

Fiona is also a professional bassoonist and contrabassoonist who studied at Birmingham Conservatoire and the Royal College of Music from 1997-2003. She has freelanced widely in the UK, appearing with many major orchestras and ensembles such as the BBC Concert, Symphony and Philharmonic Orchestras, Manchester Camerata, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, The Royal Shakespeare Company, and many others. Fiona held a tenured position in the orchestra of the Municipal Theatre of Santiago, Chile, from 2009 until 2021, when she returned to the UK to
embark on a part-time Masters in composition at Royal Birmingham Conservatoire.

Fiona has a particular interest in creating compositional frameworks that enable improvised and notated
practices to co-exist and interact and therefore enjoys working with musicians from a wide variety of backgrounds.

We’re really looking forward to welcoming Fiona to CASSGB and can’t wait to hear her piece!

My shawms and crums have been getting all the glory recently, so it’s time I gave my oboe and cor anglais the spotlight for a change.

Here they are at my oboe station, where you could find me greedily hogging 4 stands (blame the sheet music and iPad logistics)! These photos were taken while rehearsing for “Fifty”; an exciting new work by @fionatroon which we premiered at @royalbirmcons @codafestival tonight. It was properly thrilling to play, and a chance to perform alongside a great band.

LAST DREAM OF THE MORNING
+ CANTO LIBRE FOR VICTOR JARA
2pm, Sun 28/09/25
Centrala

The trio of musicians that make up Last Dream of the Morning are absolutely central to the British free scene. John Butcher (saxophone), John Edwards (bass), and Mark Sanders (drums) deliver everything you would expect from improvisers of their calibre - powerful, captivating music with layers of intensity. While all three have played Fizzle recently, it is a real treat to have the full trio on the programme.

Regulars on the Birmingham scene will be familiar with pianist Steve Tromans and his deeply thoughtful musical projects which traverse wide-ranging philosophical themes. Canto Libre for Victor Jara is a birthday celebration of the Chilean artist and activist after whom it is named, featuring Fiona Troon (bassoon), Maja Pluta (violin), and Sarah Farmer (violin).

Tickets: £10.5 (£5.5 stu.)
Available from our website (link in bio), or on the door/at the box office.

With thanks to Arts Council England for their support.

My Visiting Research Fellowship at BCU has been transferred to the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. Here’s a picture I took outside the Conservatoire as part of the ongoing project with Pedro Cravinho on the lives of jazz musicians in Birmingham. Eliza Wrenn Payne with Fiona Troon. We used it in mono but thought I’d share it in colour to celebrate. @fionatroon @wrennemusic
