160 years of great hospitality.

Excited to be launching ‘Peace Of Mind’, a new book by Maria Saleh Mahameed (b. 1990, Umm el Fahem; lives and works in Ein Mahel) at Offprint Paris. The book presents a body of work created during the months of war; As the daughter of a Ukrainian mother and an Arab father from Umm el Fahem, Saleh Mahameed often explores her complex identity, reflecting a charged, tangled political and social reality.

Her monumental charcoal-on-canvas painting installations are rich in drama and veiled in mystery. They are underpinned by an intuitive, physical approach, incorporating movement, kneeling, and wallowing in the painterly surface. Despite their monumental scale, Saleh Mahameed’s canvases evoke drawings on paper; these are free, dynamic paintings that provide space for visual and conceptual exploration. “Whenever I feel blocked and have difficulty getting the painting started, I depict horses. Despite my great fear of them, following a childhood accident, I am deeply drawn to this noble animal, to the way it stands tall in space. Through the horse, I feel free to act in painting, without fear.” Saleh Mahameed’s words suggest that her entry into the creative process through the trauma sets the painting in motion, linking it to renewal and healing. The exhibition’s title, Peace of Mind (Rahat al-Rūh in Arabic), expresses the spiritual aspiration for inner peace and reconciliation set against the existential struggle. The book is a co-publication with Tel-Aviv Museum.

“Jennifer Abessira‘s body of work is saturated with cultural memory. The story she presents is always fragmented, a patchwork quilt of the prosaic and the poetic, but thanks to the shared memory of civilization, this tapestry comes seamlessly together. We can see this is a tale that has been disrupted: it has a beginning, middle, and end, but not in that order.

Abessira challenges traditional photography with digital manipulation, linking different worlds, and using primary colors. She preserves and reinvents in one fell swoop, effortlessly stitching together the personal and collective. She interweaves the delicate narrative threads of daily life, pausing over the nuances of human connections, persisting in seeing the breathless beauty of routine. Visual minimalism and analog themes are conveyed through digital tools to draw the eye and open the heart to details often ignored. Excess is overlooked in favor of an introspective and gentle intervention and small gestures which elevate the familiarity of every day to the lofty heights of lyricism.

At first it seems the focus of her new solo exhibition is departure, finality, and farewell. In truth, these three “elements” are merely objects to be captured, delayed, and maybe subdued. Thus, this exhibition is not at all about farewell but in fact its denouncement. It is not a separation but rather stubbornly holding on; not an ending but the struggle to keep going. These all play an integral role in the open relationship she maintains with existence, resisting any rational attempts to be tamed. For Abessira, life is not a space for solving problems but instead a place which creates them.” From the exhibition text by @ran_k_i #TheRefusalToSayGoodbye
