POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Put together this edit using the upbeat energy of the song “City of the Year” to bring some of my favorite visuals from @lupefiasco’s set (with @djsmokeypbmg) on the ‘Back to Basics Tour’ to life.
•
As a filmmaker and editor, I love finding the rhythm between the music, the performance, the crowd and the visuals — and this one was a blast to piece together.
•
Grateful for the opportunity to be there, capture the energy, and create something for you all to enjoy. 🎥⚡️😌🤙🏼

Why So Serious? 🎥

- Happy Batman Day 🦇 -

Bodyguard: “Yo, Gambol,

somebody here for you.

They say they’ve just killed the Joker.

They brought the body.”

Gambol: “So, dead, that’s 500.”

Joker: “How about alive? Hm?

You wanna know how I got these scars?

My father was…

a drinker…

and a fiend.

And one night,

he goes off crazier than usual.

Mommy gets the kitchen knife

to defend herself.

He doesn’t like that…

not one bit.

So, me watching…

he takes the knife to her,

laughing while he does it.

He turns to me and he says:

“Why so serious?”

He comes at me with the knife.

“Why so serious?”

He sticks the blade in my mouth.

“Let’s put a smile on that face.”

And… Why so serious?

Now… our operation is small…

but there is a lot of potential…

for aggressive expansion.

So which of you fine gentlemen

would like to join our team?

Oh. There’s only one spot open right now,

so we’re gonna have… tryouts.

Make it fast.”

Lupe Fiasco’s Food & Liquor means something to me that’s difficult to put into words because it isn’t simply an album I listened to—it became part of my life. I discovered it during a time when I was still figuring out who I was, what I believed in, and what kind of person I wanted to become. There was something about Lupe’s honesty, intelligence, and willingness to say things that other artists wouldn’t that connected with me on a deeper level.

I remember listening to this album and feeling like someone was putting thoughts into words that I didn’t always know how to express myself. The stories, the struggles, the questions, and even the contradictions felt real. It made me look at music differently and taught me that hip-hop could be vulnerable, thought-provoking, and meaningful without losing its edge.

Years later, Food & Liquor still takes me back to a specific version of myself. That’s what makes it so special. It reminds me where I came from, what I cared about, and how much I’ve grown since then. Some albums entertain you. Some albums influence you. Food & Liquor became a part of me.
