As one of our signature events, Beloved Dinner holds a special place in our chapter. This year, we were honored to host the largest Beloved Dinner our chapter has ever had.

Thank you to all the incredible women who joined us. It was truly a privilege to cook for you, host you, and create a space dedicated to celebrating and appreciating everything you bring to our lives and our campus! We are so grateful for each and every one of you.

A special thank you to @irvingmendoza7358 who worked behind the scenes to plan and execute such a meaningful night and to all the brothers who made this night special!

Say hello to Ashley Salgado, another incredible first-generation CM Ram! 👋🐏

Choosing CSU’s world-class Construction Management program, Ashley builds upon her foundation after earning her associate’s degree in construction technology in high school with skills in collaboration, leadership, and sustainability. She also enjoys the benefit of the community that CM provides, being around supportive professors, classmates, and industry partners! Get to know Ashley in this Q&A 👇

Q: What does it mean to you to be a first-generation college student?
A: For me, it means the world to be a first-generation college student. Carrying my family’s wishes and goals with me at every turn is more important than simply obtaining a degree.

Every time I enter a classroom or come to campus, I am reminded of the hard work my parents put in to provide me with possibilities they were never able to have. Because I’m actually learning how to build things, I’m creating a new route for the future generation and because of that, studying construction management feels meaningful in a way. It’s inspiring and moving.

Q: What communities do you hope to impact in your future career?
A; In my career and life, I hope to make a lasting impact in the construction industry and in the communities that benefit from it. I want to be part of projects that truly make a difference, like building schools, homes, and spaces that bring people together.

Beyond that, one of my biggest goals is to inspire and empower more women to pursue careers in construction. It’s still a very male-dominated field, and I want to help show that women can lead, build, and create just as strongly as anyone else. Being a first-generation college student in this field, I know what it’s like to take a path that not many people expect of you. For me, construction isn’t just about the buildings we create, it’s about building people up, too, and that’s what matters most.

You’re already making such an impact in our communities, Ashley! We’re so proud of you! 💚🐏💛 CSU construction management student Ashley Salgado smiles in front of Guggenheim Hall on CSU’s campus

Meet the wonderful Kelly Velasquez, one of our first-gen HDFS Rams! 💚🐏💛

Kelly is proudly part of the HDFS Peer Mentor program alongside other fantastic first-gen Rams! We’re so proud of you all!

Passionate about supporting and promoting well-being among marginalized communities, Kelly exemplifies what it means to be a leader. Get to know her in this Q&A 👇

Q: What do you enjoy most about CSU and your major?
A: At CSU, I’ve enjoyed finding spaces where I truly feel like I belong. Through these spaces, I’ve been able to build a strong community with people who share similar goals. The staff in my major is especially supportive, and their dedication has made my experience even more meaningful.

Q: What does it mean to you to be a first-generation college student?
A: To me, being a first-generation college student means carrying my family’s dreams with me, breaking barriers, and building a new legacy. Pursuing higher education allows me to create change and serve as a source of support and inspiration for my family.

Q: What advice would you share with future first-generation students?
A: Some advice I would give to future first-generation students is to not be afraid to ask for help. Professors and the different offices on campus are here to provide resources and support. Also, make the most out of your college experience by attending events, games, and all the fun opportunities that come your way.

Q: What communities do you hope to positively impact in your eventual career?
A: Through my career, I hope to help and inspire marginalized communities, such as Latinx and Hispanic populations, as well as first-generation students who aspire to continue pursuing their goals. I want to serve as a mentor and a source of encouragement, showing others that their goals are achievable.

We’re all so proud of you, Kelly! We love all our first-gen Rams! 💚🐏💛 CSU student Kelly Velasquez smiles with animal mascot CAM the Ram

As we continue to celebrate our remarkable first-gen students, meet Oscar “Oski” Sanchez-Salguero! 👋🐏

A proud @csudesignandmerchandising Ram, Oski chose CSU to pursue product development with the goal to make an impact in the cosmetic and beauty industry creating products to help people feel more confident and empowered. Get to know Oski’s story in this Q&A 👇

Q: What do you enjoy most about CSU and your major?
A: I really enjoy the people I’ve met here, from classmates and professors to the amazing coworkers I’ve had through my jobs at the Rec Center and the barbershop.

Getting to connect with people from all walks of life and hearing their stories has taught me so much. It’s those everyday interactions that make my CSU experience so special and remind me why I love what I do.

Q: What does it mean to you to be a first-generation college student?
A: Being a first-generation student means facing a lot of “firsts”: new experiences, challenges, and lessons that no one in your family has gone through before. It can definitely be stressful and overwhelming at times.

I’ll never forget my first semester at CSU... I actually dry-heaved and cried on two separate occasions in an empty Morgan Library and in the CSU Rec Center parking lot because I was so stressed about FAFSA and student loans. But looking back, I’m proud of that moment because it shows how far I’ve come. It’s tough sometimes, but it truly does get better. Every challenge makes you stronger and reminds you why you’re doing it! Not just for yourself, but for your family and everyone who believes in you.

Q: What advice would you share with future first-generation students?
A: Don’t be afraid to ask for help! It might feel intimidating at first, but professors and staff are here to see you succeed.

Reaching out can open doors and connect you with people who truly want to see you grow. You’ll be surprised by how many amazing connections you make just by asking questions and staying curious.

We’re so proud of you, Oski! Keep glowing and leading the way 💚🐏💛 CSU student Oscar Sanchez-Salguero smiles next to a dress form with two classmates
