What Are the Goals of the NICA Pilot?
The NICA Pilot program offers an evidence-based approach to evaluating trail user safety and environmental considerations in a site-specific, supervised framework.

The pilot allows three youth mountain bike teams to travel on select singletrack trails currently posted as “no bikes” with an emphasis on three goals:

Goal #1: Help student athletes overcome fitness and time restrictions by having greater access and variable route options within the lower mountain trail system

Goal #2: Reduce exposure to steep, rough fire roads and motor vehicle roadways, both of which can present safety hazards

Goal #3: Help State Parks officials evaluate trail usage patterns, user-on-user conflicts, and environmental or wildlife impacts

A Blueprint for More Equitable Access and Myth Busting
The NICA Pilot program is a vital proof-of-concept for evaluating the impacts of greater access for all off-road cyclists on singletrack trails. Responsibly sharing access to singletrack trails can foster mutual understanding across user groups about why more direct connections to nature are valuable.

During the NICA Pilot program, there also will be data collection to evaluate the impacts of responsibly sharing trails while helping dispel perceived threats or fear mongering myths often attached to bikes.

Take the Survey - Help Improve California's Trails

The California Natural Resources Agency and California State Parks are conducting a statewide survey to better understand how Californians use, experience, and value trails and outdoor spaces.

Trails are essential places for recreation, health, mobility, and connection to nature. California is launching a statewide effort to improve access to recreational trails, like hiking, biking, and horseback riding routes, especially for communities that have historically had less access to them.

This effort is part of a larger plan to make the outdoors more inclusive and accessible, support climate resilience, honor tribal priorities, and help meet California’s “30x30” goal (protecting 30% of land and coastal water by 2030).

Act Now! Take the survey by Monday, June 8.

Your input will help shape future trail investments funded by the voter-approved Proposition 4 Climate Bond to build trail projects as well as guide updates to the California Recreational Trails Plan.
