THE UNKNOWN (ON 16MM + LIVE SCORE BY FISCAL HARM) (1927, USA, Tod Browning) An armless knife-thrower. A woman terrified of a man’s touch. A love story of almost unimaginable perversity. In a travelling circus, Alonzo the Armless (Lon Chaney) astonishes audiences with his ability to hurl knives using only his feet. But beneath his extraordinary act lies a terrible secret. When he falls hopelessly in love with Nanon (a young Joan Crawford), the ringmaster’s daughter whose pathological fear of men’s hands makes Alonzo her seemingly perfect suitor, his obsession sets in motion a chain of events as grotesque as they are tragic. One of silent cinema’s most gloriously twisted masterpieces, THE UNKNOWN is a fever dream of sexual obsession, jealousy, mutilation and monstrous sacrifice. Directed by Tod Browning, who would later unleash FREAKS upon the world, it’s a carnival nightmare in which love becomes a form of madness and the human body a battleground of desire. Chaney gives one of the most extraordinary performances of his career, hurtling towards a climax of almost unbearable cruelty and savage irony. Nearly a century old and still capable of leaving audiences open-mouthed, THE UNKNOWN is a genuine don’t-miss experience on the big screen. Presented on an original 16mm print with a specially performed live score by @fiscal.harm. With animation by @wycarson.art Tickets at THENICKEL.co.uk

THE UNKNOWN on 16mm with live score by Fiscal Harm returns this October On the lam, criminal Alonzo hides in the circus as The Armless Wonder, a performer who uses his feet to hurl knives. Alonzo keeps the arms he really has concealed to hide his identity. Meanwhile, ringmaster’s daughter Nanon has a phobia of being touched by men, but is romantically pursued by not only Alonzo but the strongman Malabar. Alonzo’s desperation to remain with Nanon will only end in tragedy. Lon Chaney delivers a striking silent performance defined by physical transformation and expressive intensity, anchoring a dark carnival set gothic melodrama by the director of FREAKS. Sunday 18th October 4.30pm and 6.20pm Tickets at THENICKEL.co.uk Video by @purdie.riff.underground

saturday~~ Pop Mutations & A Cut Above present: Kulku + Fiscal Harm + Innis Chonnel then afterparty with - Lizzie Urquhart B2B Mr TC + 12th Isle + Emma Diamond + Luca Venditozzi (free with Kulku tick or £5 on RA) Saturday 4th April The Flying Duck 18+ Kulku embodies an exhilarating Happening, a profound ceremony of raw music. Organic, driven, grounded yet floating. Kulku was founded by Johanna Riska and Andreas Riska alias Wenzlovar. The roots of their music grew out of influences from early minimal music (Moondog, Steve Reich), ritual music and art rock legends of the 60s. In the tradition of German Krautrock bands such as Can and Faust, the band is characterized by a sound whose raw material is made up of Orff instruments. With this special collection of instruments: metallophone, drums, orchestral timpani, xylophone, clarinet, saxophone, cello and an assortment of self-made instruments a universe of metaphysical stories is created. Stories about enlightened dogs or lost visionaries in the urban jungle full of light and shadows. An acoustic perpetuum-mobile that is fed by concentrated absorption. Exploring the sound spectrum of wood, metal and the human voice. Kulku calls their music No Age, a mix of un- kitsch spirituality and the raw energy of punk/no wave.
