AS THE FOG LIFTS

Fall mornings have a way of hiding the river for a while.

You step into the river with only pieces of it showing through the fog, working by feel more than sight. Then, slowly, the light starts to push through. The far bank appears, the valley opens up, and the river begins to reveal itself again.

Some mornings are better when they take their time.

Midge Tip lines are one my “go to” lines yet they are perhaps stillwater’s most misunderstood fly line.

The versatility of @rioproducts series of Midge Tip lines allows for multiple presentation options.

In my latest YouTube video I spend a day on the water demonstrating how I use my Ambassador Series Midge Tip to target trout feeding on chironomid larva and pupa in deep water.

Please checkout my YouTube channel to watch. I hope you enjoy it and find it helpful.

📍Stamp River Provincial Park

Earlier this week, I had the wonderful opportunity to capture some of the annual Salmon Spawn here on Vancouver Island for @scottyproducts :

........

The Coho and Chinook salmon spawn is in full swing in Stamp River, near Port Alberni! We visited earlier this week, and it did not disappoint!

Every year, thousands of salmon return to the river to reproduce in a display of biological drive and determination that is truly astounding. Stamp River will bring Sockeye, Chinook and Coho salmon, however, the Sockeye run usually comes a bit earlier, around August.

Upon their arrival at the mouth of the river, both male and female salmon undergo significant physical changes, often changing colour entirely. Males also grow large, hooked jaws with sharp teeth for fighting off other males for the right to spawn.

From late summer through December, the remains of thousands of salmon will be scattered in the river, creating a feast for bald eagles, gulls, raccoons, mink, otters, bears and more. By March, the salmon eggs hatch and the young fish eventually make their way to the ocean, continuing the cycle.

Stamp River is a fantastic place to view a wide variety of wildlife, with an extremely impressive salmon ladder that's built beside the beautiful natural falls. Black Bears often steal the show as they fill up on salmon prior to hibernating in the fall.

Trails are wide, easy to navigate, and well-maintained. There's even a place to check out a live camera feed of salmon as they pass through the salmon ladder.

Here in BC, you can learn more about this breathtaking yearly phenomenon by seeking out excellent organizations like @pacificsalmonfoundation , @watershedwatchbc or @fishingbc . They have a ton of info on where to find spawns happening near you, and how you can get best enjoy some responsible, low-impact salmon viewing.

They’re back! 🐟 These are CHUM salmon — running the Coquitlam River right now 💪🌊 Unlike sockeye, chum don’t turn red — they go dark green and purple, and the males grow big canine teeth (that’s why they’re nicknamed dog salmon 😄). They’re staging in the shallows, about to dig their nests, lay their eggs, then give their bodies back to the river 🌿

Have you ever watched a salmon run? 🐟
