A meaningful step forward for open-water lifesaving. 🌊

Swim Global Project is proud to share that Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz has agreed to co-sponsor H.Res. 1188, supporting federal recognition of open-water lifeguards as first responders and emergency response providers.

The resolution was brought forward by New Jersey Congressman Christopher H. Smith, continuing his longstanding effort to secure recognition for the essential lifesaving work performed by open-water lifeguards.

This latest milestone follows outreach led by Swim Global Project founder Nathalie Martin, working alongside the United States Lifesaving Association (USLA) and advocates across the country who continue to build bipartisan support for this effort.

For Swim Global Project, this represents another important step in its growing policy and advocacy work. After successfully working at the Florida level with Senator Carlos Guillermo Smith and Representative Anna V. Eskamani on drowning-prevention legislation, SGP is grateful to now be helping advance drowning prevention and lifesaving advocacy at the federal level.

Congresswoman Wasserman Schultz’s support is particularly meaningful given her longstanding engagement with drowning prevention and water safety in Florida.

No one organization or individual moves policy alone. Progress happens through relationships, persistence and people willing to work together. SGP is grateful to Congressman Smith for bringing this issue forward, Congresswoman Wasserman Schultz for adding her support, and USLA leadership and advocates across the country who continue making the case for America’s open-water lifeguards.

One more voice in Congress. One more step forward.

Most lifeguards never make a headline.

No ambulance. No rescue video. No breaking news.

That's not nothing. That's prevention working exactly as it should.

I wrote about what a fatal drowning actually looks like in a lifeguarded pool versus the ocean, why the two jobs are perceived so differently, and why we need more lifeguards, not fewer.

We are incredibly proud to welcome Christian Sears as an Ambassador to the Swim Global Project.

Christian brings a combination of education, leadership, and frontline lifesaving experience. As the founder of Fit2Guard, he has dedicated his work to preparing the next generation of lifeguards—helping men and women of all ages develop the strength, endurance, and confidence required to meet the real physical demands of lifeguarding in pools, oceans, and waterfront environments.

A science educator and former STEM curriculum coordinator, Christian believes deeply in the power of knowledge and preparation. His ability to bridge science, training, and real-world rescue readiness makes him a natural leader in the global water safety movement.

Christian also served 18 years with the Bethany Beach Patrol, rising to the rank of Lieutenant, and is a USLA Nationals medalist—a testament to both his athletic excellence and his commitment to lifesaving sport. His passion lies in ocean safety, lifeguard training, and building the physical and mental resilience required to protect others in the water.

Through his work with Fit2Guard and now as a Swim Global Project Ambassador, Christian continues to champion a culture of preparedness, strength, and service.

Welcome to the global movement, Christian.

At the Swim Global Project, we continue working toward a world where everyone learns to swim and every community has the knowledge and capacity to save lives.
