Midlife pain is real, it’s common, and it deserves to be taken seriously. Menopause doesn’t mean it’s time to slow down. You deserve to keep moving, feeling strong, and doing what you love!

I have long been a fan of the “Hit Play Not Pause” podcast. Selene Yeager has kept me company on more training runs than I can count! 😆 So it was a true honor to return as a guest on her podcast. A few years ago we recorded an episode together for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and this time we discussed an important topic for fans of her podcast: breast cancer in active menopausal women.

We covered a range of topics!
• What a breast cancer diagnosis means for women who run, ride, lift, and train
• The different subtypes of breast cancer, and how treatment is tailored to each subtype
• Why exercise is one of the most powerful tools we have during and after treatment. Exercise is medicine!
• Coping with treatment-induced menopause, which often arrives suddenly and intensely
• The nuanced conversation about hormone therapy after breast cancer, in particular for hormone-sensitive breast cancers
• Where MHT, Duavee, & low-dose vaginal estrogen may fit, and why individualized care matters
• Effective non-hormonal options for hot flashes, sleep, and other symptoms
• A balanced look at hormone therapy risks for women without a history of breast cancer

My message to every woman listening: a diagnosis of breast cancer does not have to mean stepping off the path…. With the right care team and the right information, you can keep moving, reclaim your strength, and emerge stronger!

Vaginal estrogen can prevent dryness, discomfort, and importantly, urinary tract infections (UTIs), which when untreated or severe can lead to life-threatening sepsis. I spent Saturday on the Superior Hiking Trail, watching all these incredible women challenge themselves @grandtraverseduluth. Mother Nature was glorious, the athletes were strong, and the smiles went on for miles (or at least when I was taking pics). A perfect day.
