Not only are face coverings recommended by health officials, but they’re also mandatory in Savannah, Beaufort, Bluffton, Hilton Head, Port Royal and Beaufort County. 😷 It’s a precaution our team is taking heading into the holiday weekend. #maskup #fourthofjuly #stopthespread

Dr. Hasan Kwame Jeffries is the author of Bloody Lowndes: Civil Rights and Black Power in Alabama’s Black Belt, which tells the remarkable story of the African American freedom movement in Lowndes County, Alabama. He is also the editor of Understanding and Teaching the Civil Rights Movement, a collection of essays by leading civil rights scholars and teachers that explores how to teach the Civil Rights Movement accurately and effectively.
Hasan’s current book project, In the Shadow of Civil Rights, examines the black experience in New York City from 1977 to 1993. It connects key political and cultural events, such as the youth rebellion in the South Bronx, the emergence of anti-apartheid student activism at Columbia University, and the election of the city’s first black mayor, to the evolution and implementation of public policies that changed black lives and black communities forever, such as those that undergird the war on drugs, mass incarceration, and the city’s response to the HIV/AIDS crisis.

Join us Thursday at 7pm for this paramount conversation on the relationship between African Americans and Law Enforcement!

Our story of freedom began in 1862 but it wasn’t until June 19, 1865 that enslavement for all in America would end. Join us June 19th for a digital celebration of freedom! Visit blkfreedom.org for more details! ...
On this June 19th, six leading Black museums and historical institutions from coast to coast will join forces to launch BLKFREEDOM.org, a digital commemoration of Juneteenth, the day that the Emancipation Proclamation was officially enforced, ending enslavement in Texas. BLKFREEDOM.org will air an original video presentation featuring appearances from Lonnie G. Bunch III, the first African American and first historian to serve as the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, as well as Dr. Johnetta Betsch Cole, anthropologist, educator, museum director, and the first female African American
president of Spelman College, and the Honorable Carla Hayden, Librarian of Congress,
the first woman and the first African American to lead the national library. The program
will premiere at 12:00PM EST/11:00AM CST/ 9:00AM/PST on June 19th, 2020.
BLKFREEDOM.org is a combined effort between Charles H. Wright Museum of AfricanAmerican History (Detroit, MI) @thewrightmuseum , Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park (Hilton Head Island, SC) @exploremitchelville , Northwest African American Museum (Seattle, WA) @naamnw , Black Archives Historic Lyric Theater (Miami, FL) @bahltsoflo , National Underground Railroad Freedom Center (Cincinnati, OH) @freedomcenter , and the National Civil Rights Museum (Memphis, TN) @ncrmuseum. Through educational content, artistic performances, and shareable discussion prompts, this collaborative program will explore the meaning and relevance of “freedom”, “justice” and “democracy” in Black American life, from a historical and contemporary framework.
