SHIELDS OF PROTECTION, a solo exhibit by Susan Risi
October 4–27, 2024
Reception: Friday, October 4, 6pm-9pm

Five15Arts @ Chartreuse
1301 NW Grand Ave
Phoenix, AZ 85007

Gallery Hours:
Fridays 6–9pm, Saturdays & Sundays 11am–2pm
Or by appointment: sjrisi@msn.com, (602) 717-1194

Five15Arts presents Shields of Protection, a solo exhibit by longtime collective member Susan Risi. Risi’s work is primarily stoneware: ceramic made using selected clays which are fired at high temperatures. She completes her ceramic sculptures with other materials such as steel and glass.

The centerpiece of this exhibition is the recent series of wall-mounted works of the title. These large round shields variously incorporate color, pattern, and mixed materials to create bold and personal emblems, expressing both “humor and sadness. Life can be joyous and tragic at the same time,” writes the artist.

Susan Risi holds an MFA from SUNY New Paltz and has exhibited her prize-winning work in New York and Arizona. The public is invited to experience this unique collection of original art and to meet the artist, who will be present during all gallery hours.

I’ve been a member of @five15arts since 2017. I got in just as the gallery space on Roosevelt (515 Roosevelt) was closed because the building was being redeveloped. The Phoenix Center for the Arts provided us space for a while and then we started to share the space at 1301 Grand Ave with @hazelandviolet. You probably know the space because the trees outside the Bragg’s Pie Factory are festooned with fantastical creatures Beatrice Moore creates and the palm trees are covered in colorful, crocheted blankets. One of the best things about sharing space with Nancy Hill (she’s both Hazel and Violet) is that she has great taste in art (thanks Nancy for buying a couple of my pieces).

Another great thing about Five15Arts collective is that the gallery space is one of the best in Phoenix. High ceilings, nice light and a fun location.

But the best thing about Five15Arts is there are 12 artists who create in a variety of mediums and a variety of styles. The one thing we have in common is we are all serious about our art. We are currently looking for new members. Go to five15arts.com/new-members-call for all the particulars. When you want to be part of a collective, have a great place to display your art and get to know the Grand Ave art scene, take some pictures of your artwork, polish up your artist resume and think about what you can offer a great group of artists. Deadline is October 13.

If you have any questions let me know.
