In 2025, three theatre and performing arts organizations in the United States became the first in our industry to officially be designated Apartheid Free Zones (AFZs): Theatre of the Oppressed NYC, Bechdel Project, and Festival of Latin American Contemporary Choreographers (FLACC).

The AFZ campaign is inspired by the South African anti-apartheid struggle and the international solidarity movement that emerged in support of it. Like the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement, the AFZ campaign is a form of nonviolent action aimed to end all forms of complicity with apartheid Israel to compel it to comply with international law.

TW4C sat down with Sulu LeoNimm, executive director at Theatre of the Oppressed NYC; Maria Aparo, co-creative director at Bechdel Project; and Liz Duran Boubion, artistic director of FLACC. We talked about what motivates their action in solidarity with the Palestinian people and what role they see the American theatre industry playing in international struggles for peace and justice.

Theatre of the Oppressed NYC, the Bechdel Project, Festival of Latin American Contemporary Choreographers, and Cannonball Festival have announced they are Apartheid Free Zones (AFZs).

Borrowed from the same strategy that helped bring down apartheid in South Africa, AFZs are intersectional spaces that bring together multiple struggles for justice and equality under the focus of the movement for Palestine. They are acts of placemaking that can turn seemingly apolitical or neutral performance spaces into motivating community hubs.

Becoming an AFZ is as simple as three steps:

1️⃣Declare your commitment: make a plan and set a deadline to transition
2️⃣Become an AFZ via PACBI and BDS commitment: materially divest from Israel until it ceases to violate international law
3️⃣Make it your own: infuse all the wonderful particularities of your unique organization, local community, and vibrant intersectional values

Want to create your own AFZ? Head to tw4c.com/afz to request the Toolkit.

Santuario Movimiento is a weekly community space that welcomes all bodies to move, dance, restore and connect in a time that needs you most.

It is an improvisation-based dance sanctuary that cultivates presence, and care with mixed genre tracks to move to, big windows, sprung floors and beautiful street sounds.

It is a time for self-guided movement and occasional partnering suggestions, ending with a group check-in centering sanctuary as a movement research process.

Come as you are… give and receive... see and be seen… rest, release, regenerate and play. Your presence or your non-presence is your participation. Do as little or as much as you need to.
