One of my favorite ways to explore a new city is through its craft community. During my two months in New York, I discovered wonderful workshops, tried new techniques, met inspiring makers, and collected so much inspiration along the way.I love how making things with your hands can bring complete strangers together and make you feel at home anywhere in the world.
Here are some of my favorite craft experiences in NYC. I’d love to hear about yours, too!

Join us for “Weaving with Wild Fibers” with Angela Eastman on Saturday, October 10 from 3pm-5pm at the Bunnen Commons Porch at Hambidge!

This workshop will take place during our annual fall open house. It will cover information on harvesting, processing, and weaving with wild fibers such as vines, bark, and leaves. We will work with material harvested from Hambidge’s campus to create several small samples of weaving techniques. While we weave, we will discuss how using invasive and/or native plant material can carry imbue meaning into our work.

Experience is encourage but not required. All experience levels are welcome, but please note, there is a small workshop fee for materials and registration is required. Visit this link to sign up (spots are limited and filling up!):

I went to a basket weaving class yesterday at Piedmont Environmental Center taught by Angela Eastman of @flagmountain.studio
I made the little guy during class out of invasive wisteria vines that were pulled from the PEC campus in summer. They let us take home leftover vines and I made the taller basket this morning. She's an excellent and patient teacher! She's also a blacksmith and made the new awl I brought home as well. 😁

Absolutely stoked to attack the wisteria in my front yard once winter hits. I also know quite a few places to go after some kudzu, too. I love new hobbies.

SESSION SEVEN RECAP! Here’s a look at last week’s workshops with @shanerceramics @bettebarnett and @flagmountain.studio - students explored how facial expressions and form can create comfort and connection through sculpting human faces onto ceramics mugs. In metals, there was a deep dive into the creative potential of steel and the process of fusing gold and other metals to steel. And for Special Topics, students transformed wild invasive vines into useful baskets for harvesting and serving food. Can’t forget - there was paddle boarding and swimming too!
