POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

On 21 October, we went to court expecting decisions on applications that could determine whether further works affecting Nairobi National Park should be stopped while the legal challenges are heard.

Instead, the hearing was postponed. The judge was away on official business.

The parties had been required to file their submissions by 17 August. More than two months later, we are still waiting for a ruling on interim protection.

Meanwhile, construction continues along the park’s boundary. There are no stop orders in place.

We have some serious questions.

Why has a decision on temporary protection taken this long?

What urgency is being attached to the possibility of irreversible environmental damage?

And if the court eventually rules against the project, what happens to any habitat that has already been destroyed?

We are not demanding a particular judgment. We are demanding that the question of protecting Nairobi National Park is treated with the urgency it deserves.

Tomorrow, 27 October, we return to court.

Because a judgment delivered after irreversible damage has occurred may be legally significant, but it cannot necessarily bring back what has been lost.

Nairobi National Park cannot afford to wait indefinitely.

True #leadership is not measured by how long someone stays in #power, but by their ability to recognize when the #people no longer want them to lead.

A protected area is a promise: some places are worth more left as they are. Albania made that promise for Vjosa–Narta in 2004 and strengthened it with the 2017 Law on Protected Areas.

In February 2024, Law No. 21/2024 changed the terms. Its amendments opened protected areas to tourism and accommodation developments, and large resort plans for the Vjosa–Narta region followed. The landscape stayed on the map; the protection around it became negotiable.

Scientists, environmental organisations and the European Parliament have since called for the 2024 amendments to be repealed. In July 2026, the government announced the law would be revised. What matters now is whether the revision restores real safeguards, or only changes the wording.

Protection that can be bought back isn’t protection.
