5 students in BC SHRM attended the student day at the State HR Conference located in Richmond, VA. Students learn from a variety of HR professionals all around the state. Some topics of discussion were emotional intelligence, empowering leadership, trust in the workplace, multigenerational, hurdles, and how to become an HR Ghostbuster. Keynote presenter Karith Foster started out the morning discussing lessons in leadership, listening, and laughter.

The insights learned throughout the day will help students push their knowledge of the HR field and gave them the opportunity to network with professionals in various industries. In the marketplace, students were able to connect with different companies and learn about what they provide for HR professionals. There were also plenty of free goodies! Ask those pictures how many pens and water bottles they collected! #hrva24

They also celebrated Dr. Vargas’ birthday that was on Friday.

Professor Ron Alabanza talked about his career, and how he transitioned from being a grant writer to a graphic designer for over 20 years. Besides being a professor in the media arts department, he is also a freelance designer. He talked about the differences between an artist and a graphic designer and how graphic designers are more focused on others than creating for themselves.

As a freelance designer, Alabanza has worked with Andrei Dacko, CEO of 3-D juice, Works, in creating their website and other deliverables. He walked through the process of creating a website and how to plan and discuss what the company is interested in creating.

At the end of class, Alabanza instructed the class to create logos with a variety of different animals including a honey badger, ant eater, mantis, and killer bee.
