Half Nelson (2006) is by far my favorite film I’ve ever seen. Written by Ryan Fleck & Anna Boden, directed by Fleck, cinematography by Andrij Parekh (shot on Super 16), music by Broken Social Scene, and starring Ryan Gosling. This film is gritty, heartbreaking, and beautifully acted by everyone in it. I watch it about once a year and have yet to find a film that tops this one in my mind.

Rectify (2013-2016) is so brilliant. It’s 30 episodes of the best acted, best written, and most beautifully shot television I’ve ever seen. Rectify is not afraid to take its time telling the story, every shot feels like the most gorgeous painting, and it has one of the greatest character arcs of all time. This is my go-to comfort show, but it also fuels me with a lot of inspiration.

The Breakfast Club (1985) is one of the best scripts, in my opinion. But it mostly inspires me because it does a lot in a limited space. It gives the message that you don’t need multiple or extravagant locations or crazy plots to tell a great story. I have applied that to my filmmaking in every project.

BEGINNING AGAIN is a REAL thing for sweet, senior Hattie. Tragically, her owner that ADORED her, passed away…and of course we said YES to helping this under 7 lb adorable granny who has no teeth and missing part of her lower jaw…and also as a way to honor her papa’s love.
Hattie has incredible energy, and a zeal for life. Loves to play, walk, nap, & sunbathe. Lucky girl is being brilliantly fostered by Justine & Miguel, until she finds the person or peeps to help her write her next chapter. That You? PLEASE SHARE HATTIE’S STORY Thank You!

It’s Kind of a Funny Story (2010) follows a teenager named Craig who feels lost and overwhelmed by life. After he goes to a hospital and says he wants to end his life, he gets admitted to an adult psychiatric ward. While there, he learns more about himself, faces his anxiety, and rediscovers his passion for art. This movie was great. Keir Gilchrist does a good job portraying Craig and showing his insecurities and the way he sees life. The movie does not give Craig a traumatic past. Instead, it shows how he puts pressure on himself to succeed and becomes anxious whenever he feels behind or when someone puts pressure on him. It shows that sometimes people do not need someone to fix their problems, they just need comfort and someone to listen. Zach Galifianakis also surprised me with his dramatic performance. He gives a performance that balances dark humor with real emotion and vulnerability. Unlike many heavy movies about psychiatric hospitals, this film takes a more gentle and understanding approach. It talks about teenage depression and serious academic anxiety without making everything feel dark and hopeless. The movie also has really good editing and a nice balance between comedy and serious moments. However, some of the acting can feel a little flat, and the story can sometimes be more comedic than dramatic. Overall, this movie is an emotional, and hopeful movie about anxiety, depression, friendship, and learning to ask for help. The film shows is that mental health struggles can be managed and that you do not have to carry the weight of the world alone.

With the recent passing of Gloria Steinem, this is the perfect time to watch Mrs America!

#whattowatch #mrsamerica #gloriasteinem #cateblanchett #rosebyrne

This miniseries brings the 1970s fight over the Equal Rights Amendment to life, following the women on both sides of the battle, from Phyllis Schlafly to Gloria Steinem, Shirley Chisholm, Bella Abzug and Betty Friedan.

And with Cate Blanchett, Rose Byrne, Uzo Aduba, Margo Martindale, Tracey Ullman, Elizabeth Banks and Sarah Paulson in the cast, the acting is genuinely phenomenal.

What I love most about Mrs. America is that it doesn’t present feminism as one neat, unified movement. It explores the disagreements, politics, personalities and tensions within the movement itself, while showing just how much was at stake. It is sharp, complicated, beautifully acted and still feels incredibly relevant. If you’ve never watched it, genuinely, take this as your sign.

▪︎ “We had imagined someone being a little bit older in that part, maybe mid-30s, more of a Mark Ruffalo type of guy, and through our casting director who was friends with Ryan's manager or agent or somebody, they just started talking about the role and his manager said, ‘Oh, that might be something that Ryan might be into.’ He got a hold of the script and—before we knew any of this had happened—we were having lunch with him to consider him for the role. We'd only seen 'The Believer', which we thought was a terrific performance, but thought this guy was just out of high school, how is he going to teach? We thought he was too young. We looked at his other movies and I actually thought, ‘This would be great. He's still young but he's not 19. He could play late 20s and it will be great, this teacher who's idealistic right out of school. I feel that it worked. It shows his rapport with the students.’ ”

- Director Ryan Fleck on how Ryan Gosling got involved in the project.

"Ryan and Anna were the first directors to send me a playlist based on my character and it moved me so deeply because I always make a playlist for each of my characters. I always start with some kind of...a piece of music or song to kind of anchor me into getting started." @pascalispunk 2025 #interview with @usweekly at Freaky Tales premiere

Amazon gave me $5 to watch something on Prime Video. This already had a discount code added to it so it was only $5.85 after taxes. I haven't seen this anthology yet but I heard it has a Pulp Fiction vibe but weirder & the Tom Hanks cameo here is amazing. Have YOU seen it yet? What did you think of it???? #ryanfleck #annaboden #pedropascal #freakytales #freakytalesmovie
