This account is newer so I thought I would reintroduce myself! My name is Maddie (they/them) and I’m a queer musician (@volenaband) and DJ based in Brooklyn.

I have a deep appreciation for dance culture and queer spaces; I mainly play disco, house, new wave, and indie.

I’ve been collecting records for over half my life now, and in addition to playing in a band, I love sharing and geeking out about music across genres. I started DJing with my best friend @fleetwatermac as @dj4lastnames in 2022…? And it sort of took off from there! We often held it down @marlowandsons and @babysallright had a residency @gingersbar_brooklyn and have brought vinyl to corporate events, parties, even a sauna. This time in my life grew my appreciation for disco, house, and nostalgiacore.

More recently I’ve been dipping my toes into solo sets, spinning @tokyorecordbar and around the city. I’ve also been lucky to spin in Joshua Tree, Mendocino, and Vegas with @thatdjkidcharlemagne.

Music is my life and my life is music!

My attempt at cosplaying Scott Hunter (running mode) was short lived and mostly consisted of wine and dumplings in -4 degree weather.

Turning 30 has made me come to realize that I am not a birthday person and that’s okay! But traveling and spending time with people that I love is a piece of cake and I’m lucky to do it

This year was big so I wrote about it.

This band has given me space to talk, to cry, to mess up a LOT, and to sing. That love has had a snowball effect, culminating in 2025. A release. A release show. Another release, a cassette of B-sides. Ten shows with Volena, two shows with Color Temperature, two music videos, my first interview, our first press, my first web series appearance, and making it to the final round in a national songwriting competition. Singing together at Laura and Billy’s wedding. Our record for sale in my favorite store. Looking at all of these things together, I’m like, holy shit, something happened!

I was also so privileged to be able to learn and travel SO much this year. I drove across the country from Los Angeles to New York. I went to Alaska with my mom and her favorite people and did a lot of hiking! I went to the Adirondacks like I do every year. I visited Copenhagen…three times :) I went on an ancestral visit to Föhr, a small island off the coast of Germany, with Volena, my grandmother, to see where her mother grew up. I went to Berlin and Prague after that. Took so many drives to the beach, and to Loon Lake to work on new songs. I drove to Asheville a few weeks ago to perform at The Grey Eagle.

I danced at Berghain. I danced (and DJ’d) at Lauren and Jame’s incredible wedding in Joshua Tree. I danced (and DJ’d!) in New York, of course. I danced to Charli in the front row at Barclays. I danced to A.G. Cook’s set at Brooklyn Paramount after taking his School of Song class. I danced as Nicole Kidman on Halloween to Zara Larsson.

I watched in awe at so many gigs this year, taking in the incredible scene we’ve found ourselves in.

I think we’re finding our footing and this year will bring even more incredible shows, solo and full-band —save the date for January 30 ;)

Music is life. Life is music. Easy.
