The cryptids of Drag!
Earlier this year I had a privilege of working with @devil.manne, @fleshhhive and @paulsallenmusic to create a sold out @dunedinfringe Drag show celebrating Nonbinary and Genderqueer Drag in Ōtepoti Dunedin.
-
Starting my Drag career in Ōtepoti performing as a Drag Queen or King didn't feel right for me so I decided to embrace my Nonbinary and Autisic pride and perform as Honkers the Drag Jester. It has been such a gift exploring my gender, the joys of life and all the silly not so cool things with all of you! I'm a big fan of this jester privileged. As the scene developed I have been so happy and proud to see people step out of the binary with their Drag and explore what it means for them. I have never felt such a strong sense of community and Nonbinary pride before this scene!
-
I look forward to seeing all the new and wonderful things people show with their Drag. Drag is for everyone!
-
Fingers crossed for another show next year with even more Cryptids of the Ōtepoti Drag scene!
-
Thank you so much to everyone who made this show happen!

NEW INTREPID LIFE FORMS EMANCIPATE QUEER DESIRES

Come witness alien contusions and rogue life growths crafted from excursions into the inner wilderness.

Through sculpture, sewing and song, we heal our wounds through creative abstraction, happening upon hope among chaos. These beings and their songs animate our individual experiences of queer joy and resistance. It’s a messy but vibrant menagerie embodying conflicting feelings of hope and grief.

Enjoy bathing among the raucous joyous chorus of creatures who will not be silenced.

Please join us to mark the opening of The little guys that come out of me: sit and listen to them, a new exhibition by Natasha and Ezra Munro and Lucky Pollock.

Through a “tag team” collaborative process spanning 12months, siblings Natasha and Ezra Munro crafted a series of elaborate and sometimes explicit beings from donated and found objects, clay, fabric and printed materials. Lucky Pollock and Natasha Munro then sonically responded to the creatures, with Lucky’s sound works being crafted on a Nintendo DS.

With the exhibition, the artists consider whether “the playful yet confronting nature of these creatures and their songs enable a more realistic depiction of queer expression. The aim of these works was to spark joy (and possibly shock), to grieve but also to play. Some of these beings are almost toy-like, but perhaps too confronting to quite be so. The bitcrushed sound of the Nintendo combined with Lucky’s hyperactive and frenetic compositional style amplify this feeling.”

Queer joy means living freely, openly and honestly in alignment with one’s emotions and desires. Unfortunately in our current world this also means embodying that which some simply repress, refuse to understand, or outright scrutinise. The creature-like creations of Ezra and Natasha do not gloss over the pain that is caused by this oppression, nor are they completely overwhelmed by it, integrating these conflicting aspects to become a dynamic gathering of symbolically hopeful life forms.

🗓 Opening: Thursday 8 October, 5.30pm with refreshments from @libertybrewingnz
Hours: Wednesday – Saturday, 12 – 4pm
Closes: Saturday 21 November

SELF-CARE FOR ALIENS is a meeting ground between @fleshhhive and I where we wanted to explore the radical queer spirit finding home in the organic vessel. To get there we used our celebrated photographic practices towards screen printing with various makeup onto fabric. Currently is exhibited at the wonderful @depotartspace out in Devonport, Tāmaki Makaurau. Come feel the wonderful chaos we created! Open until the 26th of April Tue-Sat 💖

DEPOT is proud to announce our two upcoming March exhibitions!

DEPOT 3 Vic Road’s second exhibition of 2025 features the collage and sculptural works of local artist Sarah Morrah. ‘Neural Bloom’ is a meditation on the power of our thoughts. Each work carries a whisper of something both ephemeral and enduring, like our neural pathways, like thoughts blooming into form.

Exhibition Opening: Neural Bloom 🧠 💐
📅 Friday 14 March, 5-7pm
📍 DEPOT 3 Vic Road - 3 Victoria Rd, Devonport

3 Vic Road visitors can also browse the DEPOT Shop | Toi Toa collection, including our Maker of the Month for March - Shaw Road Ceramics.

DEPOT Artspace is delighted to showcase works by Natasha Munro Hurn & Ezra Munro. ‘Self-Care for Aliens’ is a meeting ground between both artists expressing the relationship of the radical queer spirit finding a home in an organic vessel.

To be trans for the artists is embracing mutations in the face of social alienation. At the forefront of the exhibition is cherishing this life practice that leads to fuller lives and shows different representations of queer subculture in Aotearoa.

Exhibition Opening: Self-Care for Aliens 👽 💅
