On August 31, one year before the legal deadline to Close Rikers, the Campaign to #CloseRikers held a Countdown to Closing Rikers Day of Action. Dancers from campaign partner @Flexin_flexout performed an original piece, and were unexpectedly joined at the end by our organizer Edwin Santana 😂🤣

With focused action from City Hall, we can significantly reduce the number of people in Rikers by August 31, 2027, and put our City clearly back on the path to closing Rikers with urgency!

This week is National Arts in Education Week 📚 👯

A nationwide call for every student to have access to a quality arts education. 77% of Americans agree they should. Yet 2 million+ students nationwide still don't have that access, and in NYC, only 21% of high schools offer dance education.

When every child has access to dance education in school, we open the door for the next generation of dance workers and strengthen the field for years to come.

All week, we're sharing the data, events, and opportunities behind this work. Stay tuned and get involved.

We had a powerful time last Friday evening in Brooklyn, bringing together community and partners to reflect on the collective harm caused by incarceration and to explore community-based alternatives rooted in accountability, healing, and dignity. The circle was facilitated by fellows from @newyorkpeace and hosted by @flexin_flexout
